    In 1536, on July 18, the English Parliament passed an act voiding the authority of the pope in England. In Florida, 46 percent of churchgoers follow a Protestant faith among the 70 percent of citizens identifying as Christians (research by the Pew Charitable Trust). Nearly 25% are religiously unaffiliated

    On July 12, 1875, the city of Leesburg was incorporated a little more than a decade before Lake County was formed from portions of Sumter and Orange counties. Five days later, on July 17, 1875, Leesburg's first town election was held. J. G. Wallace was elected mayor and Akin Stivender, marshall.

    💀Creepy-cool: A look back and forward at Oddities Marketplace

    The Lake County Oddities Marketplace took over the Lake County fairgrounds with cool and creepy style and a lot of laughs on Saturday, July 13.

    Shoppers perused taxidermy, bug art, bones and bone art, wet specimens, witchy items, clothing, campy and cute gee-gaws along with a variety of accouterments and memorabilia.

    🎓This week in local history: Salute to Lake-Sumter College founder

    Paul P. Williams, the founding president of Lake-Sumter State College in Leesburg, died eight years ago this week on Friday, July 15, 2016.

    Williams, who served as president for 18 years until his retirement in 1980, led the college during periods of great change, taking it from modular classrooms to the current campus on U.S. 441 in Leesburg, then merging it with the all-Black Johnson Junior College in 1965.
