Tryouts coming up for new AAU girls volleyball program ‘Club Vollocity’

The fall sports season is just around the corner — but for the area’s best and brightest girls volleyball athletes, there’s about to be a new opportunity to test their skills and embrace the game.

Tryouts for Club Vollocity, a new AAU-style girls volleyball club, will be held on Aug. 3 at the Lake-Lehman High School gymnasium.

In an area teeming with volleyball talent, Club Vollocity is committed to offering these athletes another pathway to travel on their journey. But, for the founders and coaches of this new program, the hope is that an impact will be felt both on and off the court.

“We really want to teach a balance between ethics and sportsmanship,” said Mark Major, one of the coaches and founders of Club Vollocity.

Major is one of the four Club Vollocity coaches leading this new venture into existence. Alongside him: Lake-Lehman head coach Chris Kukosky, Lehman assistant coaches Miranda Parry and Brynn Giordano and Misericordia assistant coach Brynn Kukosky, who also made two all-conference teams and an all-state team during her playing days at Holy Redeemer.

All five have played, coached and been around the sport for the majority of their lives, have found success in the game and are eager to continue to work with the game they love and influence the next generation.

“We want to pass on the love and passion for volleyball that’s sustained us,” Major said. “We want to teach them how to be sportsmanlike, how to win and lose with honor.”

Club Vollocity is opening tryouts to any interested female volleyball players between the ages of 12 and 16 (as of July 1, 2024).

While the program calls the Back Mountain home, they’re hoping to draw athletes from all over the area, and ideally would be able to field multiple teams based on age when the time comes.

Not only will Club Vollocity be providing athletes with another avenue to get noticed as they look to further their volletball careers, it will also help players keep sharp as they look to their respective high school seasons when the time rolls around.

“A lot of kids want to have a place to play that will still be competitive,” Major said.

The community response behind the new club as they get themselves off the ground has been really positive, according to Major, and some of that support is evidenced in some of the amenities covered by a club membership for players who make the team.

In addition to tournament fees and gear, a club membership will also entitle players to discounts at businesses like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Danko’s Gym, helping athletes stay properly equipped and in prime shape when they hit the court.

For more information on Club Vollocity, interested athletes could check out the club’s Facebook page .

It all comes back to one thing for Major and the rest of the staff: guiding these athletes not just to success on the volleyball court, but success in whatever path they choose to travel in life.

“Coaching is such an underrated position in terms of having an impact on kids,” Major said. “There are so many lessons learned in sport. … We want to teach the kids to handle adversity and have a positive time.”
