Across Iowa this weekend we see a number of events that mash-up genres and activities. Some of these might seem strange on paper, but that’s what you thought when you tried that food pairing you swear by now. (Supposedly, for the adventurous out there, pickles and peanut butter is a treat.) The Power Glove-toting Heatbox brings his blend of comedy and beatboxing loops to The Olympic in Cedar Rapids. Experimental folk artist Jenny Parrott visits The Black Angel on Saturday, flexing their Omnichord and singer/songwriter skills. In Dubuque, B-1 Yoga Studio is holding a Karaoke Yoga session, where yoga practitioners are encouraged to sing along with the tunes. Check out the rest of the weekender for more!
Iowa's 1st participant in world's toughest horse race bids farewell ahead of Mongolia trip
A big send-off party was held in Central City on Thursday night for Cedar Rapids firefighter Shelby Van Weelden, who is one of about 40 international riders and the first Iowan ever chosen to participate in what some say is the longest and toughest horse race in the world: the Mongol Derby.

Heartlanders extend affiliation with Minnesota Wild
CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG) - The Iowa Heartlanders on Friday announced a three-year affiliation extension with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. Under the affiliation agreement, the Heartlanders will continue to serve as a resource for the development efforts and personnel needs of both the Iowa Wild and Minnesota Wild. The agreement allows Wild prospects to be assigned to the Heartlanders for developmental purposes throughout the season.

With Less Than A Month Until School, New IKM-Manning Superintendent Excited To Be Serving The District
With the many projects scheduled for the IKM-Manning School District this summer, the new superintendent, Dr. Angela Huseman, has been busy ensuring everything is ready for the 2024-25 school year. Huseman was selected earlier this year as a shared superintendent between the IKM-Manning and Tri-Center School Districts, replacing former Superintendent Trevor Miller, who will now oversee the Exira-EHK and Audubon Community School District. Huesman, a Carroll native who graduated from Carroll High School in 1985, wasn’t thinking of pursuing a degree in education, but looking back, she realized it was her calling.
Lundquist Lawsuit Against Charles City School Board Headed for Trial
The lawsuit filed by former Superintendent Anne Lundquist against all five members of the Charles City School Board appears headed for trial. In April, Lundquist was placed on administrative leave while, according to School Board President David Schrodt, the district investigated allegations that raised “questions about Dr. Lundquist’s fitness for duty and ability to serve as an employee of the Charles City Community School District.”
