Single family homes, townhomes proposed near Leland's commercial strand

Plans to bring more than 200 homes near Leland's growing commercial strand are currently under consideration.

According to site plans submitted to the town, a planned residential neighborhood could add 171 single family homes and 78 townhomes to more than 105 acres of land located on the western side of Chappell Loop Road.

The road sits just south east of the commercial stretch of U.S. 17 in Leland and just north of the Westgate neighborhoods. The address for the proposed development is 9961 Chappell Loop Road, according to the site plan.

The plans, submitted by developer Clearwater Group Holdings, LLC, show the proposed development would have two entrances off Chappell Loop Road — a main entrance near the road's intersection with Raceway Road, and a secondary entrance on the eastern side of the development.

It's an area that could see growth in coming years — earlier this year, plans were submitted to the town for a development that would bring 200 apartments on Chappell Loop Road .

According to the site plans for the proposed neighborhood, more than 25% of the property would be passive or active open space. The roads in the development would be maintained by the town of Leland. There is an existing pond on the property, the plans indicate.

According to the town, the site plans for the proposed development are being considered by the town's technical review committee.
