LA CROSSE, Wis. — Anthony Seefeldt of the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy track and field team brought home a State Championship from the WIAA State Finals this weekend.

Seefeldt won the Division 3 shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 9.25 inches.

The Lena/STAA senior was one of 15 local athletes from five area track and field teams competing in the State Championship meet which was held Friday and Saturday on the UW-La Crosse campus.

Seefeldt scratched on four of his six throws, but he only needed to make one big one count. After scratching on his first throw of the day, Seefeldt threw a competitive 48-3.50 with his second attempt. That distance was going to be enough to advance to the event finals, but, on his third attempt, he unleashed a 51-9.25 bomb that put him well ahead of the competition.

With the longest toss of the preliminary round, Seefeldt got to throw last in the event finals knowing he had the longest mark in the bank. He scratched on all three throws in the finals, but his mark remained unbeaten and he came away with a thrilling State Championship. De Soto’s CJ Milleren finished second with a throw of 51-7.25.

Lena/STAA’s Eva Brooks nearly joined Seefeldt atop the podium. Brooks competed in the high jump and finished as the Division 3 State runner-up with a bound of five feet, five inches. She finished second only to Deerfield’s Rylee Berryman who cleared 5’6”.

Coleman had a strong contingent in the Division 3 competition with six athletes competing in six events. The Cougar boys scored in four of their five events and placed 20th amongst 68 scoring teams with a total of 12 points.

Victor Kostreva qualified for State in both the 110m and 300m hurdles.

The Cougar junior placed seventh at the 110m distance with a time of 15.59 seconds. In the 300m hurdles, Kostreva posted the second fastest preliminary time at 39.44 seconds before placing fifth in the finals at 40.41 seconds.

Kostreva was joined in the 300m discipline by his teammate Kolton Peter’s who finished sixth at 40.47 seconds.

Dawson Patz reached the finals of the 100m dash and placed seventh at 11.44 seconds. Michael Kuchta advanced to the the finals of the 200m dash and placed eighth at 22.73 seconds.

Peters, Kuchta, Dawson and Darian Patz qualified for the event in the 4x100m relay but recorded a DNF in the preliminary round.

Meanwhile Coleman’s Kiersten Jensen competed in the girls discus throw and finished seventh with a toss of 110 feet, one inch.

Peshtigo senior Christina Powers finished her career on a high note with an eighth-place finish in the girls shot put. Powers advanced to the finals with a heave of 37 feet, 6.25 inches and then placed eighth overall at 37-6.75.

The Bulldogs’ boys 4x100m relay team of Dathen Sechen, Ethan Brissette, Madison Vorpahl and Tristan Krejcarek broke the school record twice this season on their way to a State qualification. On Friday, they were 0.24 seconds off of their record of 43.84 seconds and finished 16th at 44.08 seconds.

Crivitz sophomore Kylah Betka competed in the pole vault and finished ninth with a vault of 10 feet.

Gillett’s Bradyn Windorf competed in the 800m run and placed 14th with a time of 2:02.52.
