Man kills 19-year-old after bar ‘disagreement,’ then waits by body for cops, police say

A “disagreement” at an Iowa bar led to a 19-year-old being fatally shot in the face, police said.

Taylor County Sheriff’s deputies responded at about 3:30 a.m. July 4 to reports of a shooting at Bootleggers Bar and Grill in Clearfield, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Authorities arrived to find 19-year-old Colby Dean Nelson, of Lenox, dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head, records show.

Alan Schultz, 37, of Bedford, was standing near Nelson’s body and identified himself to deputies as the shooter, according to court records.

Witnesses at the scene also identified Schultz to authorities as the shooter, records show.

Schultz and Nelson had a “disagreement” earlier in the night inside the bar, and a second argument outside as Schultz was leaving, authorities said.

The probable cause does not indicate what the argument was about.

McClatchy News reached out to Bootleggers Bar and Grill on July 5 for comment but did not immediately hear back.

According to deputies, Schultz drove to his house, retrieved a loaded handgun and drove back to the bar to confront Nelson.

He “fired one round, striking Nelson in the face,” before unloading his gun, putting it on the ground and waiting for deputies to arrive, according to authorities.

Schultz was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder.

Attorney information for Schultz was not available.

Clearfield is about a 95-mile drive southwest from Des Moines.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
