Page County board tabs Crain Construction for county jail site work
(Clarinda) -- Page County officials have selected a local contractor for the initial work on a new county jail and law enforcement center. Meeting in regular session Thursday evening, the Page County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved accepting the site work bid from Crain Construction of Clarinda for roughly $786,000. The bid is one of several categories reviewed by the board along with Samuels Group for the new Page County law enforcement center that would house a new jail, 911 dispatch center, and sheriff's office on a portion of the county farm on the south end of Clarinda. Samuels Group Owner and President Sid Samuels says they recommended moving ahead with the site work due to the proposal coming in under the engineer's estimate of just over $1.1 million.

RAGBRAI will stop in Indianola this Wednesday, day four of the annual event. Indianola has been designated as a “meeting town” in between the overnight stops of Winterset and Knoxville, and the theme for the Indianola stop will be “Just Eat It.” The current proposed route has the riders entering the city on Hwy 92, turning north and traveling through the downtown Indianola square, where the proposed activities including food trucks, vendors, entertainment, a bike shop, safety tent, and hydration station will be located as riders then make their way south onto Highway 65/69 towards Milo.

Big animals need a big property, and ARL of Iowa just purchased a 21-acre ranch
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is expanding its capacity to care for barnyard animals with the purchase of a 21-acre ranch in north central Polk County. The new facilities include three grazing pastures, a barn with horse stalls, both an indoor and outdoor arena and a smaller structure for goats, chickens and other small barn animals. The purchase cost $2 million, with half the funds coming from the ARL Foundation. A donation campaign will also help raise funds to refurbish the facilities before animals move in.

Jackson Wentworth, a 2021 graduate of Waukee High School, has been selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2024 Major Baseball League (MLB) draft. While in high school, Jackson won 17 games as a starting pitcher, helped lead the Warriors to two state tournaments, and was ranked as the No. 2 right-handed pitcher in the state by Perfect Game. OSKALOOSA — The Southern Iowa Fair hosted the 6th Annual Caleb Hammond Memorial Race on Wednesday, July 17th with a packed infield and a full grandstand on a beautiful night for racing at the Southern Iowa Speedway. The largest field of drivers in 2024 were in attendance gunning for their share of over $18,000 in prize money, thanks to the Southern Iowa Fair board and Race Committee along with event sponsors, Copeland Auto Body, Lathrop and Sons Supply of Albia and contributor Mike Stroehle.
