UPDATE: Blackman-Leoni Public Safety officials announced a 33-year-old man was taken into custody about 1:50 p.m. Monday. The man was arrested near Ann Arbor .

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– A 42-year-old man died after suffering from multiple stab wounds early this morning, says the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety.

In a news release, officials say the incident happened around 3:58 a.m. on the 3000 block on E. Michigan Ave. in Leoni Township. When officers arrived, they located the man with multiple stab wounds which medical officials treated at the scene.

Unfortunately, police say the 42-year-old man died from his injuries at the scene. The suspect fled before police arrived.

This investigation is ongoing and the suspect has not been located. There is no threat to the public.

People who live near the stabbing like Michael Culpepper were shaken up by the news, saying it’s usually a quiet area.

“We’ve lived here for 24, 25 years and never had anything like this happen,” Culpepper said.

Hours after the stabbing, the crime lab was still at the scene collecting evidence.

“We just feel really bad you know, whoever did this no doubt it was a really bad situation. We hope they get the help that they need and are held accountable for what goes on,” Culpepper said.

With new neighbors in the area, Culpepper said he imagines they are pretty concerned about what happened.

“It’s a real shame for a neighborhood like this. Unfortunately in this day and age, you never know when or where,” Culpepper said.

He said he has heard about situations like this all over the world lately and things can happen anywhere.

“For me what comes to my mind is tell people like my son, my daughter, my wife that I love you. We take every day for granted and sometimes we may not be here the next day to tell them how we feel about them,” Culpepper said.

The situation reminded Culpepper of how fragile life is.

“Use the best amount of your time to show the people you love, that you love them,” Culpepper said.
