Major Accident Off College Ave Causes Pedestrian Fatality, Currently Under Investigation

At 11:39 PM yesterday Levelland PD received a call about a major accident off of College Avenue. A black Dodge Pickup driven by 54 year old Jack Melton was headed southbound on College, and as he approached Pine St. he veered across oncoming traffic into the parking lot of S&D Oil Change. He then hopped the curb into the Energy Fitness parking lot where he struck 21 year old Gabriela Ortiz as she was walking into the gym. The truck kept moving, striking 2 other vehicles before coming to a stop. EMS was called and transported Ortiz to UMC where she later died from her injuries. Melton was transported to Covenant Health Levelland, where intoxication and substance abuse were ruled out as a cause. This investigation is still ongoing. Read more
