Wellesley's Michael Li brings home U14 2024 New England Junior Tennis Championship
Wellesley's Michael Li made three a magic number at the 2024 New England Junior Tennis Championships. He won the boys 14 & under division title as the No. 3 seed Tuesday at Amherst College, beating No. 1 seed Joshua Chen of Lexington in the final. Li was a finalist in 2022 in the boys 12 and under tournament. His victory earned him an automatic spot in the Level 2 Northeast Team Cup at the end of July. Every age group champion will be honored at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport, Rhode Island, in July.
World War II was the last time Mass. residents could set off their own fireworks
While it used to have the company of a few other states, Massachusetts is now the only U.S. state with a full ban on consumer fireworks. In the Bay State, private citizens cannot possess, sell or use fireworks of any kind, including sparklers and firecrackers. According to CBS News, the state’s ban has existed since 1943, meaning World War II was the last time Massachusetts residents were able to use fireworks for personal displays.
Residents have chance to speak on rent increase at Leisure Woods Estates in upcoming meeting
ORANGE, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Orange Mobile Rent Control Board meeting has continued their June 11th meeting to July 16th so residents may have a chance to speak after hearing the owners of Leisure Woods Estates is seeking a 43% increase on monthly lot fees. This increase comes sixteen months after the last increase and before that, rent control kept the fee unchanged for ten years.
Gill, MA Pursuing New Composting Program
A new community composting plan was approved by the Selectboard, beginning the process of getting a weekly compost collection program off the ground for Gill residents as a prior food waste pickup system is phased out. A “composting coop” will be located near the electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot of the Riverside Municipal Building on Route 2. Residents who wish to use the site to drop off 5-gallon pails of food waste can sign up to receive a padlock code to access the enclosure once sign-up becomes available. The placement of the composting coop away from homes, with wood shavings placed on the ground, is designed to alleviate odor from the food waste.
Greenfield woman arrested in car theft investigation
GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — On Tuesday, a Greenfield woman was arrested for her alleged involvement in a three-person South Windsor, Connecticut car theft that took place in April of 2023. Yanassis Ruiz, 24, of Greenfield was charged with conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle and failure to appear in the 2nd degree.
