Two people are dead after a car crashed on Gills Neck Road in Lewes Monday night.

A BMW 328 was traveling east "at an apparent high rate of speed" around 11:30 p.m., a news release from Delaware State Police said. For reasons unknown, the car left the road as it approached a sharp curve and struck a "wall/pillar," a tree and a metal fence, police said.

Fire engulfed the vehicle and the blaze spread to a house, where it caused extensive damage, according to the police. The occupants of the home were able to get out uninjured. The driver and passenger of the car were pronounced dead at the scene. Police will identify them after their families are informed.
