    Union County library events for July

    Union County, Pa. — The Union County Library System, which includes the Public Library for Union County in Lewisburg, Herr Memorial Library in Mifflinburg, and West End Library in Laurelton, is hosting the following events in July.

    All programs are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Register to attend by calling 570-523-1172, visiting the library, or registering online. For additional information, visit the UCLS website .

    The Public Library for Union County

    Adult/Teen Programs

    • Mah Jongg Club

    Tuesdays: 1-3:30 p.m.

    Anyone interested in playing the American version of the ancient Chinese tile game are welcome to socialize and play.

    • English as a Second Language

    Mondays: 12:30-2 p.m.

    Jeanne Crago, ESL Instructor from the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, will help students of any language background with conversation, pronunciation, reading, and writing skills in English. Students of all levels are welcome.

    • July Artist Reception: Loanne Snavely

    Tuesday, July 2: 5:30-7:30 p.m.

    Join us at The Public Library for Union for an artist reception to experience the wonder of Loanne Snavely's artistry as she invites us to embrace the timeless allure of the natural world.

    • Teen Readers Club

    Saturday, July 6: 10-11:30 a.m.

    Do you absolutely love books and reading? Join other teen readers as we discuss a new book every month.

    • New Parent Group

    First Saturday of each month: 10-11:30 a.m.

    Join us the first Saturday of each month for an informal meet up led by Doula Tasha Hall. Connect with fellow new parents and parents-to-be and discuss the joys and challenges of new parenthood.

    • The Next Chapter Book Club

    Monday, July 8: 6-7 p.m.

    Join fellow book lovers every second Monday of the month to discuss all things books! Each meeting the group will pick a new book to read and discuss.

    • Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Susquehanna Valley Lewisburg

    Monday, July 15, 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

    Join members of the Quilting Guild for a day of quilting, sewing, and needle work. Bring your own materials. Those looking to attend all day are permitted to bring a bagged lunch and are responsible for the clean-up.

    • Discover the History of Cheese

    Tuesday, July 9, 16, 23, and 30: 5-6:30 p.m.

    Get ready for a cheesy adventure with Wolfe Gunter as he talks about the rich history and diverse array of cheese varieties. Samples will be provided.

    • Wii Day

    Wednesday, July 19: 2-4 p.m.

    Grab your friends and come play Wii Sports! From bowling to tennis and golf, there is fun to be had! Four time slots that run for 25 minutes each. No more than six people in a group.

    • Master Gardeners — Caring for Healthy Trees and Shrubs

    Monday, July 15: 6:30-8 p.m.

    Join Michael Reeks, a data scientist who has been training to be a Master Gardener since October 2023, as he teaches you all there is to know about bees and wasps.

    • Bridge Club

    Thursday, July 11 and 18: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    Come play and socialize with other bridge players of all skill levels.

    • Teen Crossword Puzzle

    Friday, July 19: 2-4 p.m.

    Bring your friends and solve our library crossword puzzle!

    Can you solve the mystery before the time runs out? Grab your friends and find out! Four time slots that run for 25 minutes, no more than six to a group.

    • Friendship Bracelets

    Wednesday, July 17: 2-4 p.m.

    Friendship is one of the most important parts of life. Stop by the library to celebrate your social circle by making friendship bracelets!

    • Climb Your Family Tree

    Monday, July 29: 6-7 p.m.

    Learn how to research your family history using ancestrylibrary.com, Library Edition, and other online and offline resources.

    Children's Programs

    • Baby Storytime

    Fridays: 11-11:30 a.m.

    A storytime based on the “Mother Goose on the Loose” program, which shows that children learn best through routine and repetition in a nurturing environment. Learn songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and simple ASL signs. For ages 0-2.

    • Toddler Storytime

    Wednesdays: 9:30-10 a.m.

    Join for an in-person storytime with books, songs, rhymes, finger plays, and simple ASL signs. For ages 1-2.

    • Preschool Storytime

    Tuesdays: 10-11 a.m.

    Join Miss Alicia to sing songs, read books, and learn some simple ASL signs centered around a different theme each week. For ages 3-5.

    • Pool Noodle Airplanes

    Tuesday, July 9: 4-5:30 p.m.

    Learn how to make an airplane out of a pool noodle and how to make paper airplanes. Children ages 6 and up are encouraged to attend.

    • Kids in the Garden

    Mondays: 10-11 a.m.

    Miss Kim and Miss Pat, master gardeners for Penn State will be returning to lead the Kids in the Garden program. Children will have adventures planting, weeding, and identifying different creatures that visit the garden. There will be a garden party at the end of the growing season.

    • Adventures with Cooking

    Tuesday, July 16: 2-3 p.m.

    Miss Mary is bringing back her electric frying pan and is cooking up something good with your help. Children ages 6 and above are encouraged to attend!

    • Kids GIANT Crossword Puzzle

    Thursday, July 18: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Children of all ages are encouraged to stop by the Exploratorium and play a giant crossword puzzle!

    • Adventures in Tech

    Monday, July 22: 6-7 p.m.

    Explore the library's tech toy collection! Learn how to use robots and more to unleash your creativity. Children age 7-10 years old are encouraged to attend.

    • Mud Kitchen

    Tuesday, July 23: 2-4 p.m.

    The mud kitchen is coming out for an afternoon. You can have adventures making mud cookies, mud cakes, or mud soup. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. If participants are visiting the library for books that day, they are asked to visit the library first.

    • Adventures with Fairy Gardens

    Tuesday, July 30: 2-3 p.m.

    Come to the library for a fantasy adventure making fairy houses. Create a scene that you can take home and place in your garden. Participants can bring small items that they would like in their fairy garden. Children ages 6 and above are encouraged to attend.

    • Passport to Adventure

    Month of July: During library hours

    Patrons can pick up a passport at the library and collect stamps from around the world at various local businesses. Return the completed passport and be entered to win a prize.

    • Family Movie Day

    Tuesday, July 23: 2 p.m.

    Adventure is out there! Watch the movie "Up" in our teen space.Enjoy some popcorn and make a button craft like the Fredericksons make in the movie!

    • Teen Brunch

    Mondays (except July 29): 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

    Wake up late. Pack a Lunch. Do a different fun activity each week!

    • Virtual Meetings

    Tuesday, July 23: 4:30-5:30 p.m.

    Learn how to create, host, and participate in virtual meetings via Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

    • Novel Thoughts Book Club

    First Thursday of the month: 10:30-11:30 a.m.

    Join fellow book lovers and discuss a new book each month. The book this month will be "The Lost Bookshop" by Evie Woods.

    • Adult Writers Group

    Thursday, July 4: 5-6 p.m.

    Grow confidence in your writing skills, receive encouragement, and connect with other local writers. There will be time to write in a group setting and offer critiques to other participants.

    • Cross Stitch Club

    Monday, July 8: 2 p.m.

    Want to learn how to cross-stitch? Learn the basics and complete an easy beginner's project. Already know how to cross-stitch? Work on a project to be displayed in the library. All skill levels are welcome!

    Dress up in your fanciest clothes and join us for a tea party at the library. Enjoy finger sandwiches, desserts, and fun games with your family and favorite doll.

    • Nature Explorers Adventure

    Wednesday, July 17: 10:30-11:30 a.m.

    Nature storytime in the park. Learn about the trees and the wildflowers you see. Make wildflower paper with a Pa. nature educator, that you can plant at home.• Drum Circle in the Park

    Wednesday, July 10: 10:30-11:30 a.m.

    Learn about this Native American musical tradition and have the opportunity to play different types of authentic drums in a drum circle. Meet in the Mifflinburg Community Park on North Fifth Street.

    • All Aboard! Train Day at the Library

    Thursday, July 18: During library hours

    Drop by during the day to build and play with the library's trains. Learn about trains, "take a ride" to some of our national parks, and take home a pack of activities to do at home.• Storytime in the ParkWednesdays: 10:30-11:30 a.m.Join Ms. Sheila in the Mifflinburg Community Park for storytime. Sing songs, play games, do crafts and STEM activities every week.     Connect with fellow book lovers as they discuss "The Paris Library" by Janet Skeslien. Each month our group will select and discuss a new book.

    • Cooking with Friends

    Thursday, July 25: 6-7 p.m.

    Bring a French dish to share! Experience the joy of sharing delicious dishes. Join us for a culinary journey filled with laughter, flavors, and unforgettable memories. Bring a dish to share.

    • Basic Crochet

    Saturday, July 13: 10 a.m. to noon

    Learn to crochet! Bring your own size 7, 8, or 9 crochet hook. We have a good supply of yarn at the Library. If you want to bring your own yarn, please make sure it is 4-ply knitting worsted in solid color. For ages 8-adult. Class size is limited.

    • Intro to Dog Parkour

    Wednesday, July 24: 5-5:45 p.m.

    Learn about the fun sport of dog parkour.This is an informative program for dog owners who love to hike or walk with their dogs. Learn activities you can teach your dog while out for a walk. Please do not bring dogs to this event, there will be another event at a later time to include dogs.

    • Craft of the Week — Choice of Snake/Under the Sea Coral Craft

    Week of July 2-6: During library hours

    Stop by to pick up your very own craft of the week! Children may pick up a take-home kit to make a snake or undersea coral craft. Only one craft per child and supplies are limited.• Preschool Story and Activity Time

    Tuesdays: 10:30 a.m.

    Join our storytime which includes a weekly theme with read-aloud stories, age-appropriate activities and crafts, musical instruments, and songs. Adults are offered a take-home paper with theme-related crafts, rhymes, snacks, and suggested getting ready for kindergarten activities. For children up to age five along with a parent or caregiver. Parents must stay with children during class.• Fair Queen at Preschool Story and Activity TimeTuesday, July 9: 10 a.m.Union County West End Fair Queen Mary Walter will be at Preschool Story and Activity Time at the West End Library. She will tell us about life on a farm! Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. An adult must remain with the child during storytime.

    • Reading with Maverick

    Saturday, July 27: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

    Children can read their favorite books to our certified therapy dog, Maverick. One child is allowed at a time. A parent or guardian must remain with the child.

    • Learning about Constellations

    Thursday, July 11: 4-5 p.m.

    Kids have the opportunity to craft their own personal constellation inside a jar. Children ages 3 to 12 are encouraged to attend but must be accompanied by an adult.• RobotsThursday, July 18: 4-5 p.m.Embark on an exciting journey of exploration and discovery as we delve into the world of programming and learning with robots! Join us for an immersive experience filled with hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations, and engaging challenges that will ignite your curiosity and inspire your creativity.• Craft of the Week — Floating Foam ShipWeek of July 9-13: During library hoursStop by to pick up your very own craft of the week! Come and experience the excitement as we compete in a series of challenges, tests, and activities designed to spark creativity, teamwork, and lots of fun!

    Week of July 23-27: During library hours

    Stop by to pick up your very own craft of the week! Children may pick up a take-home kit to make a camp wood keychain or a rain stick craft. Only one craft per child and supplies are limited.
