    Among The Moonshiners

Oscar Rider, known as the “fox of the hills” around Neola, the stamping grounds of the clans of Thackers and Scotts, was arrested the other night by a raiding party consisting of Corp. W. W. Creasey and Private Coy E. Hawks, of the state police detail at Lewisburg. The raiders were in the hills for three days, during which time they broke up four big stills, destroyed all the paraphernalia that went with them and four people are held for state and federal counts.

    No. 2 Coal Worry

John L. Lewis for perhaps the first time, isn’t the chief worry of the coal mine operators. What really gives them the shakes this summer are the creeping pipelines pushing more natural gas out of Texas into the industrial Midwest and on to the Eastern Seaboard. Coal is still king in the fuel field, but its throne is getting mighty slippery.

    At Camp McClintic

Jimmie Begaye, a Navajo Indian, from the Fort Sill Indian School, Lawton, Okla., has been employed by the Buckskin Council to serve on the camp staff this summer to teach handicraft Indian lore, and assist in camp-fire program and ceremonies. He has a vast knowledge of the Navajo, Comanche and Kiowa customs, songs, languages and ceremonies. He is a Star Scout. Begaye states that he plans to bring his Indian costumes and handicraft work to show the boys.

    Calf Has Calf

Of much interest to stockmen is the birth of a bull calf to a Jersey heifer owned by Mr. and Mrs. H. L Goddard, of East Rainelle, and who had her blessed event when only 11 months and one day old. The young cow known as Connie was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Goddard, and her calf has been named Tiny.  The mother weights 340 pounds and her calf 40 pounds. The breeding of the calf was unintentional on part of the owners.

    OK For Med., Energy, Housing

President Nixon reached an agreement with the Kremlin leadership today on the first concrete results of his summit meeting – joint U.S.-Soviet ventures aimed at fighting heart disease, finding new energy sources and developing safter housing. Nixon smiled as he signed the documents and Communist party leader Lenoid I. Brezhnev stood behind contentedly puffing a cigarette in an atmosphere of friendship that has prevailed since the President’s arrival for his weeklong summit.

    Now What

A Los Angeles City Council committee has agreed to set up a legal nudity zone. The council was debating an ordinance to ban public nudity, aimed primarily at parks and beaches – particularly Venice Beach, where nude sunbathing has begun on recent weekends. After spirted testimony from nudity advocates, the police, fire and civil defense committee agreed to write into the ban a provision for setting up “clothing optional zones” and to suspend enforcement of the law until there is at least one such area for legal nudity.
