WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — There is some exciting news for medical students looking to attend what is the largest medical school in West Virginia thanks to one local organization.

For over a decade, the Health Plan has provided over $3 million in scholarships to over 50 medical and nursing students who plan to practice in the Mountain State.

On Friday, The Health Plan announced a partnership with the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine to provide scholarships for students attending the school.

As the health care staffing shortage continues to be an issue in West Virginia, officials say the new partnership is a big win for everyone.

”To see people, young people, who just embrace life and are out there wanting to make a difference to help care for others. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

James Nemitz – President, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

”Hearing back from the students of what an impact this makes, I think that’s the joy that we take in the program. It helps everyone. But hearing how it really impacts these students is what makes this so enjoyable for us.”

Jeff Knight – President and CEO, The Health Plan

The scholarship will pay for tuition and fees at the school’s in-state rate and can be renewed for up to 4 years.
