    1924– 100 Years Ago

    New Hospital Building

    Ground was broken Wednesday for a new building of the Greenbrier General Hospital in Ronceverte, the contract having been awarded to the Harrison Construction Company of Portsmouth, VA, which company is just now completing the magnificent new Presbyterian Church at Greenbrier Avenue and Locust Street.

    Keep Your Waistline Down

    “If you would be President of the United States, don’t get fat.” United States Senator Royal S. Copeland of New York, gave this advice to 3,000 Boy Scouts in camp in Bear Mountain. “Keep your waistline down,” he told the Scouts, “for the day of the statesman with the fifty-inch girdle is gone.”

    Against River Pollution

    The Summers County court has entered an order authorizing the prosecuting attorney to ask for an injunction against tanneries and extract plants operating near Marlinton, to prevent them from further polluting the Greenbrier River. The cities of Hinton, Avis, Alderson, and Ronceverte, as well as the Hinton Water Company will be asked by the county to join in the proceedings.

    1949 – 75 Years Ago

    Will Train In Greenbrier

    Athletic Director Roy M. Hawley announced officially the selection of Camp Greenbrier near Alderson as a pre-season training site for West Virginia University’s football squad. Hawley said approximately 60 mountaineer grid candidates would report to Coach Dudley DeGroot there on August 28, for three weeks of drills.

    New Store For Lewisburg

    Munir Yarid will open a Men’s Shop in the Yarid building that is now under construction on Court Street in Lewisburg. Mr. Yarid is a son of Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Yarid of Lewisburg having graduated from West Virginia University this past June, and is one of Lewisburg’s most promising young men.

    To Add Addition

    G. and Alex Yarid, owners of the Lewis Theatre building in Lewisburg, have started an addition to the theatre building. The 16-foot addition will be built to the south side of the building on Court Street, and will be when completed one store room and a five room apartment.

    1974– 50 Years Ago

    Traffic Tower Dedication Held

    The new $400,000 traffic control tower was officially dedicated in ceremonies at the Greenbrier Valley Airport Saturday afternoon. U. S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, whose efforts were instrumental in obtaining the new facility, presented the dedicatory address as air traffc effectively underscouring the need for the tower, frequently interrupted the proceedings.

    Court Rules Nixon To Turn Tapes in

    The Supreme Court ruled unanimously today that President Nixon must surrender subpoenaed Watergate tapes in a historic decision that could prove crucial in Nixon’s efforts to avoid impeachment. By an 8-0 vote, the court, in an opinion written by Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, rejected Nixon’s arguments that only a President can judge what White House materials can be used as evidence in criminal proceedings.

    New Bank Groundbreaking Held

    The Ronceverte National Bank officially broke ground for its new facility at Red Oaks Shopping Center in Fairlea. Those present at the ceremony included Paul M. Scott, chairman and chief executive officer and T. E. Goodwin, president of the bank.

    1999– 25 Years Ago

    Senator Visits Green Bank Telescope With Science Camp Participants

    With participants in this year’s National Youth Science Camp, U. S. Senator Robert C. Byrd visited the soon-to-be-completed Green Bank Telescope, saying that when operational the new telescope will be the “largest, fully steerable radio telescope in the world.” This telescope replaces an earlier one that collapsed in 1988 after 26 years of service, Byrd explained.

    Governor Adds Greenbrier, Pocahontas To Voluntary Water Conservation List

    Governor Cecil H. Underwood on Tuesday afternoon added eight counties, including Greenbrier and Pocahontas, to his request for voluntary water conservation. Due to the summer drought affecting water supplies in rural and agricultural areas of the state, the governor’s request is extended to Fayette, Greenbrier, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Preston, Randolph, Summers and Webster counties.

    Energy Express Students Work In Community

    The children who participated in Energy Express at White Sulphur Elementary do community service projects. The children cleaned up their town, picking up trash from the downtown area. Seen here are Jessica Honaker, Crystal Christian, Ashley Nutter, Nikki Riggs, and Katelyn Bostic, happy the job is finished and heading back to school for lunch.
