LEWISBURG, WV (WVNS) — October isn’t for a couple more months, but Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company is kicking off the season early.

GBVC is collaborating with Author, former NASA engineer, and fellow West Virginian, Homer Hickam.

The Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company in Lewisburg is ‘ready for takeoff’ with their collaboration with Homer Hickam. 59News spoke with Homer about his collaboration with the company and what it means to be a West Virginian.

Homer Hickam is no stranger to the Mountain State: he was born and raised amongst the hills and reached for the stars!

His home state is important to him, especially the youth. Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company reached out to Hickam for a collaboration with their new beer “Oktober Sky Oktoberfest”.

When Hickam heard of the small business, he was more than excited to support them.

“When I found out that this is an up-and-coming business, with about 30 fulltime employees, I thought ‘I really wanted to support some small business’ that are on their way up,'” said Hickam.

Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company co-owner, Joshua Bennett, said he is honored to have the opportunity to collaborate with Hickam on this delicious brew.

“It is a traditional German Marzen beer, it’s a fall beer typically around Oktoberfest season. And it’s a collaboration we were able to do with Homer Hickam, so we are pretty proud of it,” said Bennett.

Hickam said there was a touch of persuasion with the collaboration.  The owners of the company said if Hickam collaborated on the beer, they would donate to a cause very dear to him.

“If you’ll do it Homer, we will provide a scholarship to space camp to some West Virginia kid. And I’m on the board of Space Camp down in Huntsville Alabama. And I said ‘sold’ I am right there with you,” said Hickam.

Six-pack 12-ounce cans and drafts are now available at the Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company Taproom.
