Firefighters from across Texas gather in Lewisville for competition and camaraderie

LEWISVILLE — Firefighters from across Texas describe themselves as a competitive bunch. They work hard and play harder.

They exhibited just that at the 2024 Texas Firefighter Summer Games, an annual series of sporting events held during the third week in July. It’s akin to the Olympics but for the state’s professional certified firefighters.

Burning up the court: Basketball

Several firefighter teams headed to MAC Sports in Lewisville on Wednesday morning to tear up the courts in few fiery games of basketball. While it was all fun and games, their moves on the court were serious.

Scorching goals: Soccer

Dirt flew across the Lewisville Lake Park soccer fields on Thursday as firefighters hustled to score a goal. The popular event filled the parking lot as families lined up lawn chairs by the fields to watch the competition.

Fire in the hole: Cornhole and darts

Two big events for the Texas Firefighter Summer Games are cornhole and darts. These casual games still get competitive but were accompanied by more conversation, drinks and dining at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lewisville.

Off-duty: Firefighter social event

When they're not competing in sports, the Texas Firefighter Summer Games attendees took some time to just hang out. The Lewisville Firefighters Association hosted all the firefighters and families for a social at Wayne Ferguson Plaza.
