Lexington man in disbelief after checking Powerball ticket. Now he plans to invest

A Lexington resident who frequently plays Powerball finally cashed out in a Sept. 7 drawing, winning a $50,000 prize.

The man is choosing to remain anonymous and purchased his ticket from the Kroger on Euclid Avenue in Lexington, according to the Kentucky Lottery .

He and his wife checked the ticket numbers right after the drawing.

“My wife called the numbers off to me and I couldn’t believe it! After about five times, it dawned on me that it matched,” he told the Kentucky Lottery.

The ticket matched four white balls and the Powerball, and the lucky player took the game’s third-largest prize.

“It took a while for it to really set in that I won off a Quick Pick for $2,” he said. “It’s a great feeling. I’ve always wanted to win something.”

The man received a $36,000 check after taxes, and he said he plans to use his winnings to invest and save.

The Kroger store will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.

The odds of winning $50,000 in the Powerball are 1 in 913,129.18, according to the game’s website. The chance of winning $1 million is 1 in 11,688,053.52, and the probability of taking home the jackpot grand prize is even slimmer at 1 in 292,201,338.

It costs $2 to play the Powerball, and you can add a $1 Power Play to multiply any nonjackpot winnings. Powerball drawings are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

The Lexington man isn’t the only lucky Kentucky Lottery player recently. Earlier this month, the organization reported a preschool teacher playing an online lottery game for the first time won nearly $179,000.
