Got your umbrella? Central KY dry spell ends as severe storms a possibility this week

After a long dry spell, rain has come to Central Kentucky, bringing with it the possibility of some severe storms.

Strong to severe storms are possible Tuesday, especially in the afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service in Louisville said.

“Damaging winds will be the main severe threat, with hail a secondary threat,” the weather service said Tuesday morning. “A brief tornado cannot be ruled out.”

Parts of Central Kentucky, including Lexington and surrounding counties, were at a “slight” risk, according to the weather service..

Lexington was expected to get between a quarter and a half an inch of rain Tuesday, but more may be on the way.

The forecast for every day this week calls for rounds of showers and storms.

By Friday, the remnants of a tropical system will move into the area, bringing even more rain, which the weather service said should help with the drought the area has been experiencing.

The weather service said most rivers should be able to handle the extra water, but there could be some localized flooding Friday and Saturday.

Tuesday’s high in Lexington was expected to be 81 degrees, with highs in the mid to upper 70s for the remainder of the week. Lows will be in the mid-60s, according to the weather service.
