DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A man is facing felony animal cruelty charges after being accused of killing two dogs, according to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.

On Monday, deputies came to the 200 block of First Circle in Lexington after getting a report about two dead dogs on the front porch of a home.

40 feral dogs found in elderly woman’s home in Denton, euthanized; man charged with animal cruelty, elderly abuse, deputies say

Investigators say that Christopher Mullins, 38, of Lexington, killed the two dogs that lived at the home. There were 12 more dogs living at the home that were seized “due to exigent circumstances.”

Davidson County Sheriff Richie Simmons says that Mullins “mutilated and beheaded the 2 adult dogs.”

“This is clearly some type of deranged person who could do something like this,” Simmons said. “These dogs were sickly … The puppies were very poor, but the dogs were dead.”

The other 12 dogs that were taken away were puppies. Although they were rescued, Simmons says that they are very sick.

A puppy named Nugget, who managed to escape the home, is now in foster care and is expected to be available for adoption once cleared by a veterinarian.

“We’re seeing these animal abuse cases more and more and more. Not just in Davidson County but all over the state. All over the country,” Simmons said.

Mullins was arrested on two counts of felony animal cruelty, 14 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and one local ordinance charge.

His first appearance in court was scheduled for Tuesday.

Davidson County records state that Mullins was given a $75,000 secured bond.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Deputy C. Soles at the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division at (336) 242-2105.

“There’s a price to pay, and there’s a penalty for this, and we want to bring the maximum penalty to them to stop these actions from happening, to send a message to the community that this is not acceptable,” Simmons said.
