Housing vision: Chrostowsky eyes ‘Great American Neighborhood’ in Wiscasset
Could Wiscasset’s long-held, ex-Maine Yankee land become a “Great American Neighborhood” with 110 units for a range of incomes and life stages? In a July 25 letter to Town Manager Dennis Simmons, Economic Development Director Aaron Chrostowsky proposes the town ask Lincoln County for American Rescue Plan Act funds to plan the use of the town’s nearly 300 acres along Back River between Old Ferry, Birch Point and Westport Island Bridge roads for a “Great American Neighborhood,” walkable and linked to Old Ferry Boat Landing and Chewonki Foundation’s Cushman Preserve, and integrating “fiber-to-home technology, clean energy and green infrastructure.”

Maine teens arrested after escaping Long Creek
SOUTH PORTLAND (WGME) -- Police say the two Maine teens who escaped from Long Creek Youth Development Center and carjacked a woman in South Portland have been arrested. Police say a woman was forcibly removed from her vehicle by 18-year-old Davyn Flynn of Portland and a 16-year-old boy around 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Liberty Commons apartment complex. The teens allegedly told the victim they had a weapon, but one was never shown, according to police.
Tapestry Singers invites new members
Local community choir, Tapestry Singers, is organizing for the fall semester with “‘Tis the Season” concerts on Dec. 14 and 15 at the Damariscotta Baptist Church. The concerts include a little something for everyone, from classical choral music to popular holiday standards. They also feature organist Sean Fleming, a full orchestra, some of the community’s best-loved soloists, and an audience holiday sing-along.

For the 4th year in a row, the luxury yacht "Kisses" has returned to Bar Harbor. Norman Braman was the owner of the NFL Philadelphia Eagles, before selling the team to Jeffrey Lurie who bought the team in 1994 for $195 million. Braman's yacht "Kisses" was in Bar Harbor in August of 2021 and late July - early August 2022 and in 2023. She was tied up at the Bar Harbor pier on Monday and Tuesday, July 29th and 30th, 2024.
Mid-Coast Audubon lobster bake fundraiser in Bremen Aug. 31
Mid-Coast Audubon is hosting its annual lobster bake fundraiser at Hog Island Audubon camp in Bremen on Saturday, Aug. 31. Members of the Mid-Coast Audubon Board will display their cooking talents and be available to answer bird questions. An $85 donation covers boat transportation, a meal of a lobster, potato, and corn on the cob all baked over an open fire on the beach, plus clams, baked onion, lemonade, coffee and a special dessert, and the opportunity to explore the island before or after eating.

Driver caught after crashing on Maine Turnpike, running across highway
GRAY, Maine — A Waterville man was expected to face charges after a crash and chase on the Maine Turnpike Monday. State police said that Robert Padilla, 39, was driving his white Ford F150 south on the highway around mile 65, south of the tolls, just before 1:30 p.m. on Monday when he used the median to pass the vehicle in front of him. Police say he hit that vehicle when he tried to get back into the passing lane.
