Dunkirk Common Council Meeting Cancelled Today
Today's regularly scheduled meeting of the Dunkirk Common Council has been cancelled, per Mayor Kate Wdowiasz. Deputy City Clerk Raymond Rosas, who made the announcement, says the cancellation is due to a lack of available council members. No further information was provided. File photo.

Update 6:14pm: Governor Hochul says she has deployed the NYS Police and other agencies to help in Oneida County. As the heat index rose and the potential for storms grew, a tornado has been confirmed in Rome, NY - just north of Utica. Photos from the scene show a church with its roof and steeple torn off, numerous downed trees and power lines, overturned vehicles - even a B-52 bomber on display at the Air Force base was moved by the strong winds.

A number of tri-state area residents reported feeling a shaking or hearing a loud boom Tuesday morning leading to quite the mystery. NASA is estimating a meteor passed through the area between 10 a.m. and noon and would account for people saying they saw a fireball in the sky. NASA said simultaneous military activity in the area may account the shaking or boom residents felt.

Jamestown Man Arrested on Outstanding Warrants, Drug and Weapon Charges
A Jamestown man who had outstanding warrants was taken into custody after a street check in the city Monday afternoon. Jamestown Police located 33-year-old Michael Green at an address on West 6th Street shortly before 12:15 PM and were aware of his warrants through the department. Green was taken into custody without incident, and further investigation found that he was allegedly found to be in possession of a small quantity of methamphetamine, a Levorphanol Tartrate pill and an expandable baton, which is illegal to possess in New York State. Green was transported to the Jamestown City Jail without incident and was held pending arraignment on his outstanding warrants, as well as two counts of 7th-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and one count of 3rd-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has been recognized as a 2024-25 Best Hospital by U.S. News & World Report, ranking in the top 15 in the state. SBUH climbed to a No. 12 ranking overall in New York State out of more than 153 hospitals statewide, up from No. 13 in the state last year. In addition to ranking in the top 8% overall in New York State, SBUH also rated high performing in 5 adult specialties nationwide, including Geriatrics, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Urology and Pulmonology & Lung Surgery. The announcement was made in a press release on July 16.
