    Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District offers August programs

    LIMA — The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District announced its open programs for August.

    • Crying Out Loud: At 7 p.m. Saturday, the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District will host a musical event “Crying Out Loud” at Ottawa Park Amphitheater, 2632 Ada Road, Lima. Visitors are invited to listen to hits from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ’90s.

    • National Night Out: The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District will help celebrate the annual National Night Out with events scheduled from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 at Heritage Park, 2092 Reed Road, Lima. There will be food, activities for kids and displays for local first responders.

    • Health Through Nature: The park district will host a session aimed at reducing anxiety through nature at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Lions Shelter at Heritage Park, 1772 Reed Road, Lima.

    Join a naturalist on the second Thursday evening of each month this summer to reap the health benefits of being in nature. Register by Aug. 5 online at www.jampd.com or by calling the office at 419-221-1232.

    • Pedal the Parks: A bicycle tour of approximately 10 miles along the Miami and Erie Canal towpath will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at the Robert Antibus Trail access parking area, 12395 Zion Church Road, Spencerville.

    Participants will leisurely travel along the towpath trail and are urged to dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. Helmets are required. Register by Aug. 8 online at www.jampd.com or by calling the office at 419-221-1232.

    • Perseid Meteor Shower: The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District invites area residents to gather to view the Perseid Meteor Shower beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Maple Shelter at Kendrick Wood, 971 N. Defiance Trail, Spencerville.

    The Lima Astronomical Society will provide telescopes to watch the annual meteor shower and view other celestial objects in one of the darkest places in the county. Visitors should bring bug spray, lawn chairs/ground blankets and a light jacket. This event is dependent on weather and cloud cover and often continues late into the night.     • Reptile Roundup: The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District will offer an educational session about reptiles at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at the McElroy Environmental Education Center, 2355 Ada Road, Lima.

    The public is invited to learn the critter characteristics that make the park district’s resident reptiles unique. Participants can try their hand at some turtle trivia, make a critter craft and discover why snakes are scent-sational.

    Children ages 6-10 can be registered as participants and accompanied by their parent or guardian. Register by Aug. 8 online at www.jampd.com , or by calling the office at 419-221-1232.

    • Jogging With Johnny: The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District will offer a “Jogging With Johnny” run from 5-6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at the Ottawa Metro Park, 2632 Ada Road, Lima. Participants should meet at the Wyandot Shelter for a warm-up walk and a few laps around the Heritage Park. All ages and abilities are welcome and people may choose a pace that is comfortable for them. Registration is required by Aug. 12, online at www.jampd.com or by calling 419-221-1232.

    • Monthly Mothing: The park district will host a study in moths at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, at the McElroy Environmental Education Center, 2355 Ada Road, Lima.

    On every second Monday from May to September, a naturalist will set up the equipment to sample what moths are on the wing in the Teddy Bear Park. Each month should bring a suite of new moths as different species emerge at different time of the year. This event starts at sunset each month.
