Fire crews continue battling Pyramid Fire near Sweet Home
SWEET HOME, Ore. – Firefighters are working to contain a wildfire that is burning more than 500 acres of woodland east of Sweet Home. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the Pyramid Fire was first reported in the afternoon of July 17, after several lightning strikes hit across Oregon. USFS officials said that as of July 22, the fire is burning 535 acres in an old-growth forest that has no recent history of fire. The fire’s location in steep, rugged and inaccessible terrain, and crews have been working on improving existing forest and overgrown roads in the area, which the USFS said should help prevent the fire from spreading south towards the Middle Santiam Wilderness, private timberlands, and nearby communities.

Fight against invasive water plant moves to Oxbow Slough at Minto-Brown Island Park
Crews will begin combating an invasive water plant at Minto-Brown Island Park's Oxbow Slough starting Monday. Visitors to Minto-Brown are advised to stay out of the slough during treatment times to avoid possible exposure. Treated plants will be marked with a blue-green dye to show areas treated. The herbicide is absorbed by the plants within 24 hours, and the blue dye may remain visible for weeks.

2024-25 contract details released for Oregon women’s basketball assistant coaches
EUGENE — Returning Oregon women’s basketball assistant coaches Jodie Berry and Tre Simmons and new assistant Jerise Freeman each signed one-year contracts this summer. Berry will earn $210,120, a 2% increase from her salary last season, Simmons will earn $122,750, effectively the same as his prorated salary last season, and Freeman will earn $200,000, according to contracts provided to The Oregonian/OregonLive in response to public records requests.
Ore. dad pleads guilty to leaving newborn daughter in recycling bin after she died
PORTLAND, Ore. (TCN) -- A 53-year-old man entered a plea deal with prosecutors this week for leaving his newborn child's body in a commercial recycling bin after she died. Multnomah County court records show Alnath Oliver pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide on Friday, July 19. Prosecutors dropped charges of second-degree manslaughter, criminal mistreatment, and rape. The Oregonian/Oregon Live reports a judge sentenced Oliver to four years in prison.

Two people died in a three-car crash Sunday afternoon, July 21, about 10 miles east of Sandy after a teenage driver allegedly drifted into oncoming traffic.
