    Newport boys lose in playoffs

    Newport put up a great effort against one of the top teams in the state in the 4A boys basketball playoffs, but came up short.

    The Cubs’ season ended with their 60-52 loss to host Baker last Friday.

    Newport trailed by just two points early in the fourth quarter, but Baker had a 10-0 run to pull away.

    Rory Barber made five 3-pointers and scored 17 points for Newport in the loss.

    The Cubs finished the season 14-10.

    Baker, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, will face Philomath in the quarterfinals Thursday at Forest Grove High School.
