LINDEN, NJ -- When Abigail Armstead recently took center stage at the Miss New Jersey Elk Beauty & Talent Pageant in Cherry Hill, it marked a bold new chapter for the multi-talented 17-year-old senior from Linden High School. Competing in her first beauty pageant, Abigail faced uncharted territory with a mix of doubt and anticipation. However, she drew strength from her extensive background in musical theater, delivering a rousing and dramatic rendition of "Home" from the musical "The Wiz." Her performance captivated the audience and left a lasting impression on the judges.

Not only did Abigail win the coveted crown, but her exceptional talent and vibrant personality earned her the Miss Congeniality title during the regional competition.

"When they called my name, I didn't move. I stood there and just stared. My heart was pounding, and I was so excited but also a bit confused. Not that I thought I didn't deserve to win, but I didn't think I was going to win," Abigail recalled when her name was announced. "My mom looked at me and said my face dropped with the most shocked expression. They had to tell me to get up and come forward."

The 5 feet, 3 inches rising star will move forward to the national finals in Jacksonville on August 12 to represent the Garden State and her hometown of Linden.

In a one-on-one interview last week, Abigail's infectious enthusiasm for the performing arts was evident as she reflected on not only her experience at the pageant but on her life in the performing arts as a singer, dancer, and actress, her love for family, and her future aspirations. Abigail's story is one of determination, creativity, and the unwavering support of those around her.

Growing up, Abigail discovered her love for singing in an unconventional setting. "I used to take my mom's phone, put her headphones in, and sing out loud in the grocery store," she recalls. "People would look at me crazy, but I didn't care. As long as I was singing, it was what I wanted to do."

Her middle school dance teacher, Barbara Brady, played a pivotal role in shaping her artistic journey by encouraging her to participate in the school production of "The Little Mermaid." Abigail reminisces, "I was scared at first, but my teacher persuaded me to do it. That was my first time ever singing in front of an audience, and it was exhilarating."

In high school, Abigail's talents blossomed further as she joined the dance company and honed her acting skills. She credits her teachers, Brady, along with her musical theater and choir teacher, Howard Whitmore, for pushing her to excel. "Without them, I wouldn't have the musical theater and dance knowledge I carry today. They have pushed me to be the best performer I can be," she says.

Abigail's recent victory in the beauty pageant was a testament to her multifaceted talents. Sponsored by the Elks, she was selected to represent New Jersey at the national competition. Abigail's confidence grew as she choreographed and performed an opening number with fellow contestants despite initial nerves. "The girls were so sweet, and everyone was so nice. It was a very welcoming space," she shares.

One of the highlights of the competition for Abigail was winning the Miss Congeniality award. "I was very surprised because I didn't think I could be Miss Congeniality," she admits. "But when my name was called, I was taken aback. It was such a wonderful moment. My mom looked at me and said my face dropped with the most shocked expression."

Abigail's standout performance of the song "Home" from the Broadway musical "The Wiz" left a lasting impression on the judges. It is one of her favorite songs because it deeply resonates with her, reminding her of the love and comfort provided by her family as the youngest of four children.

"When I think of 'Home,' I think of my family and the love and comfort they provide," she says. "Singing that song felt like a breath of fresh air. It has a very special place in my heart. I researched Diana Ross and Stephanie Mills, and their voices are so beautiful and hypnotizing. I wanted to bring that same emotion to my performance."

Abigail passionately describes her experience on stage: "When I'm on stage, combining singing, dancing, and acting, it feels electrifying. I don't even worry about the crowd; it's just me and the performance. It's like I'm in my own world and feel completely at home. The stage is where I come alive."

Looking ahead, Abigail has high aspirations for her future. She dreams of gracing the stages of Broadway and television, showcasing her talents as an African American woman in the performing arts. "I want to show that just because I am African American, I can do just as much and put out just as much on stage as anyone else," she declares. "You don't see a lot of black women on Broadway or TV, and I want to change that narrative."

Abigail's journey has been supported by her family, particularly her mom, sister, and aunt Sonia. "Without their support, I wouldn't be here," she acknowledges. "My mom and sister always walk into a room with a smile on their faces. They're my biggest fans and my biggest supporters. My aunt Sonia introduced me to the beauty and talent pageant world, and it's something I've grown to love."

Abigail quickly credits those who have played a pivotal role in her success. "I have to give props to my teachers, Mr. Whitmore and Ms. Brady, for their unwavering support and guidance. They pushed me to be the best performer I could be and were always there to help refine my skills. My family, especially my mom and sister, have been my rock. Their encouragement and belief in me have been invaluable."

As Abigail prepares to represent New Jersey at the national competition, she reflects on the significance of this opportunity. "You don't get opportunities like this often. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me," she says with a smile. "This means a lot to me because I've never done a pageant before. It's a big deal to represent New Jersey on a national stage."

When asked about her advice for newcomers, Abigail shared, "My advice would be to embrace the unknown and step out of your comfort zone. When I entered the beauty contest, I was nervous and unsure, but I quickly realized that everyone was welcoming and supportive. So, don't be afraid to put yourself out there, engage with others, and make connections. You never know what amazing opportunities and friendships may come your way." Abigail's experience of venturing into uncharted territory and finding a warm and inclusive environment is a testament to the power of taking risks and embracing new experiences.

Abigail Armstead's story is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and support. From singing in grocery stores to winning beauty pageants, she continues to shine brightly, inspiring others with her unwavering dedication to her craft. "Never tell yourself you can't do something because you can. Even when people told me I couldn't, I took that as motivation to prove them wrong. Always believe in yourself and your abilities."
