Linn County Landfill Will Be Full 8 Years Earlier than Expected
The Linn County landfill north of Marion will reach its capacity 8 years earlier than originally thought. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that increased waste from natural disasters and population growth will push the landfill to capacity. The landfill which is located along County Home Road in Linn County will end operations on June 30, 2044, according to an agreement between the city of Marion and the Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency. But updated data now shows the landfill will reach capacity 8 years sooner, in 2036.

MARION — Increased waste from natural disasters and population growth will push the Linn County landfill to its capacity eight years sooner than originally projected. The current landfill, located in Marion at 1954 County Home Rd., will cease operations on June 30, 2044, according to an agreement between the Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency and the City of Marion. However, updated projections show the landfill will reach its capacity sooner than that — in 2036.

A Cedar Rapids man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his neighbor almost two decades ago. A Linn County judge found Curtis Padgett guilty of first degree murder in May. Padgett beat and stabbed Dennis First to death in 2007. Investigators found First’s body inside his apartment at the Hawthorne Hills Apartments on C Street Southwest. But Padgett wasn’t charged until last year. In the courtroom, Padgett called First his best friend and denied killing him. Padgett’s attorney says they plan to appeal his conviction.
