Litchfield restaurant closed after truck hits building

LITCHFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A restaurant and bakery in Litchfield is closed after a truck crashed into it Sunday night.

Staff for Jubelt’s Restaurant and Bakery and officials with the Litchfield Fire Department both detailed the incident on their Facebook pages. A truck driving south on Old Route 66 crossed into the opposite lane, plowed through the roadside ditch and hit the southwest corner of the building.

Litchfield Fire said the driver of the truck was outside of his vehicle when the firefighters arrived. He was evaluated on the scene by medical personnel and was then taken to a nearby hospital.

Firefighters and the Litchfield Building Inspector were able to safely remove the truck with help from Brian’s Towing. Fencing was also put up by the Litchfield Street Department to deter anyone from entering the damaged structure.

“I can’t really say enough about all of them. Fire Chief Adam Pennock, Officer Eric Lamb, Curt Glover, many, many, other people whose names I don’t know, plus Gary Baker, the City Building Inspector – were unbelievably professional and so kind and helpful,” a restaurant staff member wrote on Facebook. “They all were here literally for hours. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Also, thank you to the city of Litchfield employees that came late at night and put up the fence around the damage, and thank you to Brian’s auto for hauling away the truck.”

Jubelt’s was not open on Monday, which is part of the normal business schedule, but staff said they will not be open Tuesday and probably Wednesday as well because of the crash.
