Southport Column: Keeping busy on the island
Many us remember Dick Snyder who lived in Newagen for many years, and who died on Feb. 21 of this year. We have an opportunity to gather at the Southport Town Hall on Saturday, Aug. 3, beginning at 3 p.m. to share stories of Dick and to celebrate his life with family and his many friends. Still room for more cool vehicles
The OBD Williams-Fossett Vintage Car Show, now in its 11th year, has changed locations over the years for differing reasons. The annual show was welcomed in its first year by the Bristol Consolidated School with only 11 participating vehicles, then moved to Fort William Henry, relocated to the former Harbor Room restaurant lot due to a restrictive culture at the park, then invited back to the school by principal Jennifer Ribeiro in 2023 with more than 40 cool vehicles doing the show. Vintage Show organizers enthusiastically thank Principal Ribeiro along with staffers Godofredo Arzate Patiño and Nicole St Cyr for the warm welcome-back and key day-of logistical assistance.
Bubba Pelton wins Ward & Sons Super Street 100 at Wiscasset Speedway
Saturday was a special day at Wiscasset Speedway as they were celebrating an event that only comes around once a year: their birthday! On top of celebrating 55 years of the speedway, Team Wiscasset used the day to honor their new 2024 Hall of Fame inductees and there was even a celebrity roaming around the grounds. You may know him as “Slugger”, or more formally, Slugger the Sea Dog.

Descendants celebrate one of Aroostook’s pioneer families
FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Nearly a hundred Haines descendants gathered Saturday to honor one of Fort Fairfield’s pioneer families. J. Wingate and Mary (Briggs) Haines settled in the Maple Grove area of the town in 1844. The couple pioneered not only a settlement, but a religion and an agricultural tradition that has endured for 180 years.
Seen at Wiscasset Art Walk July 25
At the July 25 Wiscasset Art Walk, Wood Field Farm and its horses provided wagon rides, children painted rocks, artists and civic organizations lined Main Street, and galleries featured their shows. The Walk included fencing demonstrations and musicians. And shops had sales and refreshments.
Cocaine, Meth, Fentanyl & Firearms Seized In Fryeburg Drug Bust
A man from Bridgton has been arrested as the result of an ongoing investigation into an illegal drug distribution operation in Fryeburg. Commander Scott Pelletier with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says 50-year-old Kevin L. Thurston of Bridgton has been charged with drug trafficking and possession after authorities found Fentanyl, Meth, Cocaine, firearms, and money on the man following a traffic stop.

Bush Family Classic sets fundraising record for Gary’s House
KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — Northern Light Mercy Hospital announced that the Bush Family Classic raised a record-breaking $440,000 for Gary’s House, a program providing free accommodations for families of patients receiving medical care in greater Portland. For the 4th year in a row, the luxury yacht "Kisses" has returned to Bar Harbor. Norman Braman was the owner of the NFL Philadelphia Eagles, before selling the team to Jeffrey Lurie who bought the team in 1994 for $195 million. Braman's yacht "Kisses" was in Bar Harbor in August of 2021 and late July - early August 2022 and in 2023. She was tied up at the Bar Harbor pier on Monday and Tuesday, July 29th and 30th, 2024.
Early Morning Structure Fire in Van Buren
VAN BUREN, Maine (WAGM) - The Van Buren Fire Department responded to a fire early this morning. According to the Van Buren Fire Department, at around 1:40am they responded to the area of 88 Main Street for a structure fire. When crews arrived, they discovered multiple structures were on fire behind the address.
