First, it was great white sharks in the water off the coast of Maine, now comes an earthquake that measured 2.8 on the Richter scale near West Gardiner, Maine. The United States Geological Survey, better known as USGS, is the government agency that, among other things, detects earthquakes and their magnitude worldwide. On Sunday, July 28 at 2:50 p.m. USGS detected a 2.8 magnitude earthquake in Maine near West Gardiner with the epicenter at these coordinates: 44.236°N 69.862°W. That's about here on the map, south of Augusta and northeast of West Gardiner.
Woolwich Woman in Fatal Crash
69-year-old Judy Rowe of Woolwich died in a crash on Route 201 in West Forks Plantation early this morning, July 30. The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office says an SUV driven by Rowe crossed the centerline and went off the road and hit a tree. The crash is under investigation.

The OBD Williams-Fossett Vintage Car Show, now in its 11th year, has changed locations over the years for differing reasons. The annual show was welcomed in its first year by the Bristol Consolidated School with only 11 participating vehicles, then moved to Fort William Henry, relocated to the former Harbor Room restaurant lot due to a restrictive culture at the park, then invited back to the school by principal Jennifer Ribeiro in 2023 with more than 40 cool vehicles doing the show. Vintage Show organizers enthusiastically thank Principal Ribeiro along with staffers Godofredo Arzate Patiño and Nicole St Cyr for the warm welcome-back and key day-of logistical assistance.

Descendants celebrate one of Aroostook’s pioneer families
FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Nearly a hundred Haines descendants gathered Saturday to honor one of Fort Fairfield’s pioneer families. J. Wingate and Mary (Briggs) Haines settled in the Maple Grove area of the town in 1844. The couple pioneered not only a settlement, but a religion and an agricultural tradition that has endured for 180 years.

A man from Bridgton has been arrested as the result of an ongoing investigation into an illegal drug distribution operation in Fryeburg. Commander Scott Pelletier with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says 50-year-old Kevin L. Thurston of Bridgton has been charged with drug trafficking and possession after authorities found Fentanyl, Meth, Cocaine, firearms, and money on the man following a traffic stop.

BATH, Maine — Mainer James Wells, a regular of the Bath YMCA, is cheering on his now fiancee Lilly King as she continues to make a splash at the Paris Olympics this year. King recently competed in the 100-meter breaststroke and will compete again Wednesday in the 200-meter race.
