Liberty Elementary School District reorganizes leadership

The Liberty Elementary School District governing board confirmed its new president and vice president during its Oct. 7 meeting following the resignation of President Michael Todd.

Bryan Parks, the former vice president, moved into the presidential seat with Kris Kenyon taking on the vice president position. They were brought into their new positions through a 3-1 vote with board member Paul Bixler voting against the change.

There is still one vacant seat on the Liberty Elementary School District’s governing board.

Todd resigned on Sept. 25 over concerns regarding the district’s response to an assault and a school shooting threat. In a Facebook post, Todd said  poor communication and decision making by Liberty Superintendent Dr. Cort Monroe helped him make his choice.

“I am thankful that the administration of the Liberty Elementary School District #25 finally took proper action to address the assault incident that occurred at Westar Elementary School several weeks ago,” Todd said. “As president of the governing board at the time, I requested that the administration proactively communicate with families and the community regarding the incident. I further requested and pleaded numerous times that the administration conduct a deeper investigation of prior discipline records of the student based on additional information provided by families and teachers of Westar. The administration chose not to take action until after I resigned from the governing board.”

The first action Parks took as president was to make a statement thanking Monroe.

“This board has complete confidence in Dr. Monroe and his leadership. At no time (have) any of the board members present here today considered asking Dr. Monroe for his resignation,” said Parks. “I would like to also personally thank Dr. Monroe for his dedication and leadership working tirelessly on bringing excellence to the district.”
