Advocating for the closure of Rikers Island and criminal justice reform
The news was huge for Jonathan Monsalve, president and CEO of Osborne Association, a nonprofit advocating for the closing of Rikers Island, decriminalization and decarceration. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Monday that $108 million would be allocated to transform the former Bayview Correctional Facility along Manhattan’s west side near Chelsea into 124 affordable housing units and a community hub. The project, entitled “Liberty Landing,” partners Osborne with Camber Property Group to house formerly incarcerated individuals.

Hoboken City Council to vote on compromise rent control ordinance to avoid referendum
Councilmembers and landlords who’ve been eager to avoid a public referendum on changing Hoboken’s rent control laws have agreed on a compromise to fulfill that goal. N.J. man sentenced to prison in 114 mph fatal Parkway crash
A man has been sentenced to state prison in a 114 mph crash on the Garden State Parkway that took the life of another driver. Rolando Godwin, 47, of Newark, received a 12-year sentence on Friday, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release. He pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter earlier this year.

Newark Citizen's Alert Leads to Arrest of Man with "Ghost Gun" and Drugs
Over this past weekend, a keen-eyed citizen's alert to the Newark Police led to the apprehension of a 28-year-old male who was found asleep at the wheel of an unattended vehicle with its doors open at a Newark intersection. The Newark Police Department reported that officers who responded to the call discovered the man at a stop sign near Marshlands Road and Thornton Ave, alongside a loaded, unserialized firearm—a "ghost gun"—in a duffle bag on the passenger seat. According to the Newark Police Department, the man was detained and is now facing charges, including drug possession and possessing the unregistered firearm. He was booked at the Santa Rita Jail.
