While today marks the 80th anniversary of Guam Liberation Day, there was no big celebration in the Killeen-Copperas Cove area this year. Typically, the Chamorro Association of Central Texas organizes a local Guam Liberation Day celebration at Ogletree Gap Park in Copperas Cove — an annual event that attracts 1,000 to 2,000 people.

Killeen P&Z member takes issue with councilman’s assessment of their abilities
The Killeen Planning and Zoning Commission has been at odds lately with the Killeen City Council, as evidenced by the recent council meeting last week. Such types of rezoning can often be controversial, such as in May when the city of Killeen attempted to push through the rezoning of more than 100 acres in the area of Featherline Road. But that vote failed, partially because the P&Z voted against it, causing a situation where a supermajority, or six yes votes, were needed in order for it to pass.

Vehicle Crashes into Temple Apartment Complex, Driver Critically Injured
TEMPLE, Texas — A vehicle crashed into an apartment complex in Temple on Sunday, critically injuring the driver and displacing two residents. Temple Fire and Rescue responded to the incident at Adams Bend Apartments, located at 3101 W. Adams Ave., at 5:50 p.m. Crews found a single vehicle that had exited the roadway, struck a brick entrance, and rolled over a security fence before coming to rest against a building inside the complex, according to a press release from Temple Fire and Rescue.

Killeen NAACP delegates attend 115th annual NAACP Convention in Las Vegas
Members of the Killeen Chapter and some members of the Killeen Youth Council attended the annual NAACP National Convention in July. The conference was held July 13-17 in Las Vegas, Nevada with about 4,700 people in attendance, according to the NAACP website. There were several convention delegates from Killeen including TaNeika Driver-Moultrie who is Chapter President, Youth Council President Skylahr Mimms and Youth Council Treasurer, Caleena Moultrie.

Bell County man indicted in baby kidnapping
Belton, Tx (FOX 44) – A Bell County Grand Jury has returned a kidnapping indictment against a man accused of abducting a baby from a Belton apartment in April. Eighteen-year-old Joseph Juan Diego Martinez has remained in the Bell County Jail since his arrest in April shortly after the incident.

Killeen police investigate double homicide involving armed subject
KILLEEN, Texas — Killeen police are investigating a double homicide after officers found two individuals dead from apparent gunshot wounds in a residence on Karen Drive. Justice of the Peace Gregory Johnson pronounced 28-year-old Tanesha Sedwich deceased at 8:46 p.m. and 29-year-old Walter Sedwich at 8:48 p.m. on July 22, 2024. Autopsies have been ordered to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas.

Tip-A-Cop fundraiser Thursday at Texas Roadhouse benefits Special Olympics

Texas Roadhouse will host the 16th annual Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for Special Olympics Texas. Temple is one of 67 cities across the state to participate in the event.
