KPD responds to ‘shots fired’ calls over the weekend
Killeen police over the weekend responded to half a dozen incidents of gunfire and an aggravated assault which followed a heated domestic disturbance. Just after midnight Saturday morning, police responded to a call about criminal mischief in the 2500 block of Cody Poe Road. According to Killeen Police Department spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez, a preliminary investigation of the scene revealed that shots were fired toward a home that was occupied. Police reported there were no injuries as a result of the gunfire, but they did find damage to a vehicle.
Housing grants approved by Killeen City Council
Federal grants are set to bolster the city of Killeen. The Killeen City Council held a special meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday evening to address, among other issues, an ordinance authorizing a plan for the Community Development Block Grant, or CDBG, and Home Investment Partnerships funds, also known as HOME grants. The ordinance was unanimously approved by the City Council following the second public hearing on it Tuesday night.
Free toys for military kids; ‘Christmas in July’ returns to Fort Cavazos this week
Christmas is coming early for military-connected families at Fort Cavazos this week, as a local nonprofit gears up to distribute toys for children. Santa’s Workshop at the Great Place will host its annual Christmas in July event Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. next to the Clear Creek Commissary, Building 50001 at Fort Cavazos.
Killeen police investigate double homicide involving armed subject
KILLEEN, Texas — Killeen police are investigating a double homicide after officers found two individuals dead from apparent gunshot wounds in a residence on Karen Drive. Justice of the Peace Gregory Johnson pronounced 28-year-old Tanesha Sedwich deceased at 8:46 p.m. and 29-year-old Walter Sedwich at 8:48 p.m. on July 22, 2024. Autopsies have been ordered to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas.
SPCA welcomes Emily Heglund as new executive director
A new face is joining the “pack” at the SPCA of East Texas (SPCA ETX). Last Monday, the nonprofit animal welfare group welcomed Emily Heglund as its new executive director. In her role, Heglund will be responsible for guiding the strategic direction and daily operations of SPCA ETX. Her focus will be on enhancing the organization’s rescue and adoption program, along with overseeing its SNIPPET Spay/Neuter Clinic, which provides discounted wellness services to community pets.

Vehicle Crashes into Temple Apartment Complex, Driver Critically Injured
TEMPLE, Texas — A vehicle crashed into an apartment complex in Temple on Sunday, critically injuring the driver and displacing two residents. Temple Fire and Rescue responded to the incident at Adams Bend Apartments, located at 3101 W.
