    Arkansas lawmakers, supporters respond to news of Joyce Elliott’s stroke

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Messages of support are flooding in following the news of former Arkansas lawmaker Joyce Elliott suffering a stroke.

    Elliott’s family released a statement Thursday sharing that the Democratic stalwart had suffered a stroke earlier in the week while in Dallas and that she had been transferred from Texas to Little Rock to continue receiving care.

    Since leaving the Arkansas Senate in 2023, Elliott has worked with Get Loud Arkansas, a voter advocacy group. A spokesperson for the group gave a message of support , calling Elliott a fighter.

    “The GLA team truly appreciates everyone who has reached out to show support and love for Senator Elliott,” the spokesperson said. “She is a fighter, and her dedication to a just and equitable democracy propels us forward.”

    The Democratic Party of Arkansas made a statement of support, with party chair Grant Tennille saying the group was rallying behind the lifelong Democrat.

    “The entire state should lift up Senator Joyce Elliott. Her love of Arkansas and her compassion for its people have motivated thousands to public service and advocacy for decades,” Tennille said. “We all have a better home because of her selflessness. Today, we are rallying behind her, praying for her health, and respecting her privacy.”

    The well wishes also crossed party lines, with Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin, who faced Elliott in the 2010 U.S. House race, taking to social media to wish his political rival a speedy recovery.

    “Despite our political differences, I have great respect for her passion as a public servant and her many years of service as a teacher,” Griffin wrote. “I ask you to join me in praying for her speedy and complete recovery.”

    Elliott challenged Rep. French Hill (R-AR2) for the 2nd District congressional seat in a tight race in 2020. Hill joined in the ranks of those offering there hopes for Elliott’s recovery.

    “Martha and I are so sad to learn about our friend and former Arkansas State Senator Joyce Elliot’s stroke,” the congressman posted . “We wish her a speedy recovery and extend our hugs and prayers of comfort to her friends and family.

    Elliott’s family said they would provide more updates on her condition in the upcoming days and are asking for prayers and privacy at this time.
