    Arkansas State Police gives update on investigation into DeValls Bluff standoff

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Officials with the Arkansas State Police held a news conference Friday to give an update into the investigation of a standoff in DeValls Bluff Thursday that ended in the death of a Little Rock man.

    During the standoff, officials said the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Darrell Lawayne Esau II of Little Rock, exchanged gunfire with ASP SWAT team members before he was shot and killed.

    The standoff started Thursday morning as authorities attempted to serve a warrant. Investigators said the Esau barricaded himself inside a home on East Walnut Street around 9:30 a.m. before starting to shoot at law enforcement officers.

    According to the ASP director Col. Mike Hagar, more than 400 rounds of gunfire were exchanged between Esau and law enforcement officials. ASP officials said Esau fired at least 169 rounds from six different weapons during the standoff.

    Authorities said no law enforcement officers were injured during the standoff.

    U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas Jonathan Ross said that Esau had active warrants out of Little Rock for four counts of terroristic act, first-degree battery and possession of firearm by certain persons.

    Ross added that Esau had active warrants out of Sherwood for terroristic act, possession of firearm by certain persons, aggravated residential burglary, first-degree domestic battery and a warrant out of Pulaski County for robbery.

    Police added that Esau had also previously been convicted of homicide charges.
