LITTLE ROCK, Ark – The Little Rock Compassion Center is hoping to give those in need a place to cool down, relax, and hydrate amid the blazing heat.

Leaders say during the day they take in about 70 people and at night more than 100, all people looking for shelter and cool air much like Aaron Halpain.

While staying at the center, Halpain said, “You don’t have to worry about dying of a heat stroke or something with the temperatures being the way it’s been.”

Center leaders say with an uptick of people comes an uptick in resource needs.

“More water, more baths, more electricity, the cost goes way up,” LR Compassion Center CEO William Holloway said.

In a time like this where you can’t outrun the heat, Holloway said his center is a safe place for people to go.

“If it wasn’t for shelters like this a lot of these older people would be sleeping outside,” Holloway said.

Halpain said he’s only been there a week and it’s an experience he’s not taking for granted.

“They don’t charge you anything you know it’s free to stay,” he said. “They’re really good people and it’s been a great part of my life.”
