Michael Owen tells Arne Slot the 'type of player' Liverpool should target - but there's a problem

Michael Owen has told Arne Slot the "type of player" Liverpool should be targeting as the summer transfer window enters its final month of business.

The Reds have been linked with a whole host of names this summer but one player in particular ticks all the boxes needed to become a Liverpool player, according to Owen - although the club has its work cut out in trying to get him.

Anthony Gordon has been the most popular name linked with a move to Liverpool ahead of the new campaign but bringing him back to Merseyside is proving to be a challenge. The 23-year-old, who starred for Newcastle last season with 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League , is highly valued by his parent club.

The transfer links were at their strongest at the beginning of the transfer window when Newcastle was sweating over it's financial position as the PSR deadline loomed, yet an upturn in fortunes for Eddie Howe's side means it is no longer in a position where it needs to sell.

However, should the tide change once more and Liverpool is presented with a real opportunity to snatch Gordon from its Premier League rivals, Owen believes his former club should do everything in its power to do so. Speaking to Casino Hawks , he said: "There's no doubt Anthony Gordon is a talented boy.

"Obviously there's a little bit of history there, being an Everton player and now being up in Newcastle. I can't imagine, unless Newcastle are suffering with the money side of things, then I can't imagine they'll want to get rid of one of their most exciting young players.

"He's done really well at Newcastle since he's been there, so I'm sure Eddie Howe is desperate to keep him. I'm not sure how credible that story can be, but that is the type of player, if somebody like that came available, then of course that's the type of player Liverpool should be interested in."

As things stand, Liverpool remains interested in signing Gordon this summer but any move is going to have to involve a substantial financial package to stand any chance of convincing Newcastle to let go of one of its prized possessions.

A recent report from The ECHO confirmed that the Reds have maintained their interest, and that Gordon would likely jump at the chance to join his boyhood club, having grown up as a Liverpool fan. However, Newcastle will want at least $90million (£70m/€83m) for his services.

Furthermore, the St James’ Park club wants to reward Gordon for the progress he has made in his 18 months on Tyneside, according to The Athletic . Contract talks look to be in the offing, which could give a clear indication of where the 23-year-old sees his future.
