Dominic Solanke could usurp Sadio Mane and Xabi Alonso as ex-Liverpool ace nears Tottenham move

Dominic Solanke is on the brink of becoming Liverpool's sixth most lucrative sale with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly closing in on a deal with Bournemouth for the one-time England international.

Solanke, 26, made the switch from Anfield to the Cherries in January 2019 for an initial fee of $24m (£19m/€22m) after only eight months with the Reds. Liverpool has so far pocketed $31m (£24m/€28m) from Solanke's transfer, with all add-ons included in the original deal having been activated by November 2021.

The Reds also cleverly inserted a 20 percent sell-on clause into Solanke's move to Bournemouth, which could now see them benefit significantly from his impending $76m (£60m/€70m) transfer to Spurs.

While such clauses only apply to profit, Bournemouth are still set to offload Solanke for a whopping $52m (£41m/€48m) more than their initial investment in 2019.

Therefore, if the sell-on clause applies to the profit on the initial price and the reported fee is accurate, Liverpool could be in line for an additional $10.4m (£8.2m/€9.6m). Even if it only applies to profit after the aforementioned add-ons, the Reds would still receive $9m (£7.2m/€8.4m).

This means that Solanke's total departure fee from Liverpool could exceed $38m (£30m/€35m) and potentially reach up to $41m (£32m/€37m) - a cool $17m (£13m/€15m) more than his original transfer fee.

The forward currently ranks as Liverpool's 10th highest sale in the club's history, with the add-ons already pushing him past Danny Ings and Rhian Brewster on the Reds' record sales list. However, he could soon surpass Sadio Mane, Christian Benteke, Xabi Alonso and Mamadou Sakho.

Benteke moved to Crystal Palace for an initial $34m (£27m/€31m), potentially rising to $41m (£32m/€37m) with add-ons, back in August 2016. Meanwhile, Mane left for Bayern Munich in a deal worth up to $45m (£35m/€41m) in June 2022, but after a disappointing season, most of the add-ons on the initial $35m (£27.5m/€32m) weren't needed.

Alonso set Real Madrid back $38m (£30m/€35m) in August 2009, while Sakho departed for Crystal Palace in a $33m (£26m/€30m) deal in August 2017.

Only Philippe Coutinho ($181m/£142m), Luis Suarez ($83m/£65m), Fernando Torres ($64m/£50m), Raheem Sterling ($62m/£49m) and Fabinho ($51m/£40m) have fetched higher fees than Solanke in Liverpool's history.

However, a potential $57m (£45m/€52m) move for Joe Gomez to Newcastle United fell through in June, in a swap deal that would have seen Anthony Gordon head the other way in a separate transfer.

Solanke's journey with Bournemouth began on a slow note, but he soon found his stride following their drop to the Championship. He netted 30 goals across all competitions, playing a pivotal role in their promotion back to the Premier League .

Last season, he continued his impressive form in the Premier League, scoring 21 goals from 42 appearances. This caught the attention of Tottenham. After leaving Liverpool in 2019, Solanke will depart Bournemouth with a tally of 77 goals from 216 appearances for the club.
