ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL // Liverpool cruised to a victory at Anfield against Sevilla with Luis Diaz and Ryan Gravenberch among those to impress the most on the day. Both players staked a claim to start next weekend against Ipswich Town.

Goals from Diaz (two) and Diogo Jota put Liverpool three up at half-time and from there, it was a stroll. Sevilla offered little in the way of an attacking threat, aside from the rare moments when the Reds gifted them opportunities.

In Arne Slot's first home match in charge, he can be pleased with how things are looking for his new-look side. Bolstered by several new faces who were only just back from their summer break this week, Liverpool is looking ready for the 2014/25 campaign.

Peque Fernandez and Trey Nyoni both scored in the second half and it finished 4-1 at Anfield . In the sunshine, there was plenty to enjoy in match one of the afternoon, with the second against Las Palmas still to come.

    Winners

Gravenberch was very good at the base of the Liverpool midfield while Diaz could not really have done much more to suggest he should be in the starting XI at Portman Road next Saturday. It was a good run out for all the players in red shirts, though, with Jota also looking sharp, not least with the taking of his goal. Nyoni, meanwhile, will remember his strike for years to come.

    Losers

It may well be reading too much into the teamsheet but most of the players involved in the second game at Anfield today against Las Palmas could perhaps be likely to miss out on the starting XI for the first match of the new season. Of those who were playing against Sevilla, no one looked significantly less ready than the rest.

    Player ratings

Alisson Becker (7). Taking so many chances inside his own penalty area is going to take some getting used to for the Brazilian but his footwork is more than good enough. It will go wrong at some point but the reward outweighs the risk. He barely had to make a save here but came off his line quickly on a couple of occasions to thwart some danger.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (6). Played some great passes but still getting up to speed physically. He will get his off-the-ball sharpness back quickly during the first few weeks of the season.

Jarell Quansah (6). Made the error that allowed Stanis Idumbo to go through on goal but other than that, didn't do a great deal wrong. Interesting that he was chosen over Ibrahima Konate alongside Virgil van Dijk. Very good on the ball and should fit nicely into the Slot system.

Virgil van Dijk (7). Slotted back in with his usual cool, calm and collected style. He looked like he has never been away. Some of the shorter passing will take some getting used to for the Dutch captain but he has more than enough quality to get through it.

Kostas Tsimikas (6). Got into a couple of dangerous areas down the left side of the field where he could cross from. Not really tested defensively but could start the new campaign in the team depending on where Andy Robertson is up to with his fitness.

Dominik Szoboszlai (6). Made some poor passes in good areas at times but also set up a goal and looked bright. As ever, he worked hard to win possession back on numerous occasions. The Hungarian still has another level or two to hit but looks refreshed, at least. That was his biggest issue in the second half of last season: fatigue.

Alexis Mac Allister (6). At the base of the Liverpool midfield for much of last season, Mac Allister should be unleashed further forward, especially if Martin Zubimendi can be signed. He showed glimpses here but it was his first appearance of pre-season in terms of friendlies having rejoined the group at the end of their time in the USA.

Ryan Gravenberch (7). Looked really neat and tidy at the base of the midfield, which could be a way into the team for the Dutchman. Everyone knows how good he can be on the ball; the question marks might come in matches where he is more tested in a positional sense, which simply wasn't the case here.

Mohamed Salah (6). Not at his most electric but the Egyptian got into some good positions. His place on the right-hand side of the Liverpool attack against Ipswich is already secured. He did absolutely nothing wrong but the attacking threat came more in other areas (which is no bad thing).

Diogo Jota (7). Scored a great goal and was involved in some of the great sweeping moves that got Liverpool upfield. He's a 30-goal striker if he can stay fit for the whole year. It would literally be like a new signing if that was possible.

Luis Diaz (7). He looked as if he had never been away on the left flank. Diaz has played for his national team this summer but he looked exactly the same as at the end of last season here. He scored two and should have maybe had a hat-trick.

    Substitutes

Viteszlav Jaros (6). The usual, really, from the number three goalkeeper. Jaros was good with his feet and couldn't do anything with the goal that was scored past him.

Trey Nyoni (7). Scored a great goal and doesn't look out of place alongside the stars he was playing with. A real talent and another gem that Liverpool has uncovered.

Luca Stephenson (6). Made a few strong tackles and made the most of his chance to play on the big stage. A solid professional doing a job out of position for the team at right-back.

Joe Gomez (6). Came on for Van Dijk at left center-back and looked strong and quick. There is plenty of competition for places in the middle but that is the role that he wants to nail down.

Stefan Bajcetic (6). Still working his way back to full fitness but it was good to see another step forward for the young talent. He will need to be eased back into the team next season but should be sticking around.

Tyler Morton (6). Still with plenty of interest from around Europe, it will be interesting to see what comes next for the talented Liverpool number 80. He might need to go elsewhere for more regular game time but is good enough to get that elsewhere in the Premier League.
