Liverpool transfer news as Giorgi Mamardashvili bid 'rejected' amid Nico Williams admission

It hasn’t been a great week for Liverpool in the transfer window . Just as the wait for a first signing looked to be coming to an end, the Reds’ hopes were dashed in spectacular fashion.
It has been suggested that Liverpool will not pursue any other midfield targets now , and with just over two weeks to go until deadline day, a signing of any nature is looking more and more doubtful. Nevertheless, names continue to be linked with the Reds.
Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today, including reports of a rejected bid for a new goalkeeper.
Giorgi Mamardashvili (Valencia)
Liverpool has reportedly had a first offer for Giorgi Mamardashvili rejected by Valencia. The Reds are said to be eyeing up the Georgia goalkeeper, with Fabrizio Romano claiming one more meeting will be held about the possibility of signing him.
Liverpool.com says: Mamardashvili would be an odd selection by Liverpool. He is undoubtedly a good shot-stopper, as he showed during Euro 2024, but he didn’t look anywhere near as composed with the ball at his feet, which is surely a must for a goalkeeper with the Reds.
With a fee of $33m (£26m/€30m) being spoken about as well, it does feel like a lot of money to spend on a goalkeeper, unless Alisson is planning on leaving soon. If that is the case, you’d think Caoimhin Kelleher might fancy his chances of claiming the No.1 spot.
Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao)
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has seemingly ruled out a move for Nico Williams this summer. According to Spanish outlet COPE , he was heard telling a group of fans: ‘We already have a good squad,’ having been told to sign Williams.
That could well open the door to the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, both of whom have also been linked with the Athletic Bilbao star.
Liverpool.com says: The problem with Williams will always be his wage demands – that, and the fact he seems fairly settled at Bilbao. He would undoubtedly be an exciting signing, but we can’t see Liverpool making a move.
