Real Sociedad facing fresh Martin Zubimendi issue days after he rejected Liverpool transfer

Real Sociedad is already facing a fresh Martin Zubimendi issue just days after the Spaniard rejected a move to Liverpool .

The 25-year-old has turned down the Reds in favor of remaining with his boyhood club this season , preferring to spend at least another year with the La Liga outfit despite being offered triple his current salary by moving to Anfield .

Understandably so, La Real is over the moon with Zubimendi's decision and has already prepared fresh terms for the midfielder to further secure his long-term future in the Basque Country, much to the disappointment of Arne Slot and Richard Hughes .

However, Real Sociedad's problems aren't over just yet, with the latest reports claiming that those fresh terms being offered to the Euro 2024 winner aren't quite matching up to his standards. According to The Times , the Spanish outfit had promised to make Zubimendi the team's highest-paid player if he stays.

But as per the report, La Real is failing to live up to its words, with current contract talks between both parties not going to plan. The report claims those talks are proving "problematic", which is "presumably" because the player is playing hardball and wants the same level of desire that Liverpool showed him to stay longer.

According to Capology , Zubimendi is believed to be earning just under $64,000 (£50,000/€58,000) per week at Real Sociedad, and Liverpool was reportedly willing to offer him three times that amount to move to Merseyside.

That means the Spaniard could have been earning around $193,000 (£150,000/€175,000) per week if he chose to join the Reds this summer, bettered only by club superstars Mohamed Salah , Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold .

While Zubimendi is fully aware Sociedad cannot offer him that much, he is still hoping to be the club's top earner by signing a new deal. As per Capology, that title currently goes to Mikel Oyarzabal, who is said to earn just under $78,000 (£61,000/€70,000) per week, which really isn't that much more than what Zubimendi is getting.

If Sociedad isn't willing to offer him at least an extra $14,000 (£11,000/€12,000) a week to make him joint-top earner, while Liverpool was willing to triple his wages, its understandable as to why Zubimendi may be a little annoyed at his club's ambition to keep him and live up to its promise.

Should the midfielder threaten to make yet another U-turn in the transfer saga, then it would be no surprise for La Real to dig deep into its pockets and give the Spaniard what he wants to remain at the club, especially knowing that Liverpool can blow it out the water with its financial package for the player.
