Former Man Utd star makes Ben Doak transfer plea as Liverpool faces late decision

Liverpool has been in the market for a wide forward this summer. Its pursuit of Anthony Gordon makes that abundantly clear, and it was also strongly linked with Takefusa Kubo.

Yet Arne Slot has a new option of sorts in Ben Doak . The young Scot is obviously not as developed as the players the Reds have been reportedly trying to buy, but he left a positive impression in pre-season.

Despite ranking 14 th for minutes played this summer, only Harvey Elliott and Mohamed Salah were directly involved in more shots and chances created than Doak (between the matches with Real Betis and Las Palmas, as no data is available for the Preston loss). It is little surprise clubs are hoping to take the 18-year-old on loan in 2024/25, with his former side Celtic among them.

Former Manchester United forward Brian McClair, who also played for the Bhoys, has stated his belief that Celtic should be in for Doak this season. The 60-year-old has been speaking to Football Scotland , and explained his reasoning for wanting the Reds wonderkid north of the border.

“I think he’s available on loan and he’s someone that Celtic should be interested in,” McClair said in reference to the Reds’ youngster. “I know he left a few years ago but I’ve also heard that Liverpool might want to sell him. I think Celtic should be interested in young players who clearly are good enough to be recruited by Liverpool in the Premier League and have been involved in a few games.

“His age and position is something that Celtic should be interested in. The first instance, get him on loan and then he may well be someone who can flourish in Celtic’s squad and perhaps in their team.”

McClair also later added: “The idea is that all the manager is interested in is someone who can be a positive addition to the squad and group of players. Someone like Ben Doak, if he continues to make progress, is going to be a good player.”

According to Celtic site 67 Hail Hail , Owen Beck and Bobby Clark could also be targets for the Glasgow giant. But with respect to those talented starlets, the electrifying pace and incisiveness of Doak is understandably drawing the most interest.

Let’s hope Celtic chooses not to listen to one former player in respect of recruiting another. Slot has a very important decision to make regarding Doak’s forthcoming season.

Liverpool.com says: Doak needs to play regularly. With Salah blocking his path to the Liverpool first team, a loan move seems the sensible outcome. But he also looks good enough to contribute for the Reds team now. It's not an easy decision to make.
