Thiago Alcantara has left his role as an assistant coach at Barcelona having spent some time working under Hansi Flick at the Camp Nou. The ex-Liverpool midfielder was always intended only to be a short-term addition to the staff and the new La Liga campaign kicks off this weekend.

After retiring from playing once he left Liverpool at the end of his contract this summer, Thiago has been helping Flick prepare for the new season. He was brought in as someone with huge experience of playing at the top end of the game but also as someone who can speak German — like Flick — as well as Spanish.

Thiago was only ever going to be a short-term addition to the Barcelona staff and he has now vacated that position. And according to MARCA , he will now head back to Liverpool following the conclusion of his deal in Spain.

Having left the UK for a certain portion of the tax year, Thiago supposedly needs to return to England for a period for economic purposes and then decide on his long-term future in 2025. At that point, a permanent switch to Barcelona could be possible.

Until then, though, it remains to be seen what he will do next. Thiago is expected to move into coaching though he could continue working under Flick, embark on his own journey as a head coach somewhere, or join another club where he can gain additional work experience before forging his own path.

Liverpool.com says: Is it too easy to assume that Thiago will become a great coach because he was a great player who fits the typical mold of someone who makes that transition? Xabi Alonso and Pep Guardiola are just two examples of deep-lying playmakers who have become world-leading coaches. It is really easy to see Thiago being able to do something similar. One day he might even return to Liverpool in that capacity.
