Ivan Toney has already told Liverpool his transfer answer amid shock absence

Ivan Toney has already issued a come-and-get-me plea to Liverpool as fresh questions rise over his future.

The England international was a shock exclusion from Brentford’s matchday squad for their opening Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Toney has been strongly linked with a move away from the Bees for some time now, although recent speculation has been quieter after Arsenal seemingly cooled its interest.

Thomas Frank’s decision to leave his star striker out though suggests a transfer could be in the offing though. Liverpool has been linked in the past with Toney , and the 28-year-old has made no secret of the fact he is a fan of the Reds .

Indeed, Toney has actually talked up a move to Anfield in the past. Speaking to the On The Judy podcast for Total Media back in 2021 , Toney confirmed where his allegiances lie.

“Yeah I support Liverpool, I’m a Liverpool fan,” he said. “If they come knocking, who knows?”

Toney was then asked if he would prefer to move to Liverpool without a guarantee that he would play, or to a side where he would definitely get game time, Toney replied: “I’m going to have to go Liverpool, I’ll make myself the main man.”

Manchester United has been linked with Toney, although having spent big on Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui already this summer, Erik ten Hag’s side would likely have to offload some of its players first . A move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli has also been touted, which would see him link up with former Liverpool hero Roberto Firmino .

Asked by Sky Sports about his decision to leave Toney out, Brentford boss Frank said: "A lot of things going on with Ivan [Toney], especially with transfers, there's a lot of transfer interest. Because of all that, we've decided not to include him in the squad.

"I can't give too much away the day before. Of course Ivan is a top player, we all know that. He has been fantastic for us for four years but we showed last season we can cope without him."

Asked whether Toney had played his final game for the club, Frank responded: "Who knows. There is interest, it's not close."

Liverpool.com says: There’s no doubting Toney’s quality, but would he be a good fit for Liverpool? At 28, you feel his best years may already be behind him now, and the chance to move to Anfield may have passed him by.

It’s certainly not a move we can see the Reds going for this summer. It will be interesting to see where he ends up though, if he does indeed make a move.
