Eddie Howe admission should just have given Liverpool some more Anthony Gordon transfer hope

Liverpool has been handed some encouragement when it comes to a potential chase for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon with Eddie Howe admitting that the Magpies will have to make more sales in the future.

Earlier in the summer, Newcastle agreed on a deal in principle to pay $58m (£45m/€53m) for Joe Gomez with Gordon moving to Liverpool for a fee of $96m (£75m/€88m) as part of the arrangement. That, though, was when Newcastle needed to free up some PSR wriggle room before the June 30 deadline before it ultimately sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson instead.

The Reds remain admirers of England forward Gordon, who notched double figures for both goals and assists last season, but Newcastle has managed to hold onto the player for now. Gordon's contract, though, only runs until 2026, meaning the potential for an exit has far from disappeared .

"There’s not necessarily financial pressure to lose anybody before the end of this window," Howe said, via the Newcastle Chronicle . "But player trading is key, and we have to trade players out as well as players in. That’s not necessarily in the next two weeks. But certainly, within the next window, that’s what we’ll have to do."

The closer it gets to the end of Gordon's contract, the easier it will be for Liverpool to convince Newcastle that it should cash in rather than risk losing the 23-year-old on a free in two years. As long as he doesn't pen a new deal, a switch to his boyhood side could very much still be on in the next couple of windows regardless of Howe admitting that more assets will be lost.

Liverpool.com says: Gordon would be an excellent signing for Liverpool and there is a good chance of it happening in the future. As for Newcastle needing to cash in on players to be able to spend more, that is just what every club has to go through. Liverpool wouldn't have been able to spend big on some of its game-changers had it not sold well, including buying Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk when Philippe Coutinho moved to Barcelona.
