The 2024/25 Premier League season is underway. There were no major surprises on the first weekend, but that didn’t mean there were not talking points aplenty on the first edition of Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

The most headline-grabbing comments came from Gary Neville , who predictably predicted that Liverpool would finish outside the top four , at the expense of Manchester United (what?) and Chelsea (you’re kidding, right?). But the fun on the show was not limited to the nonsensical ramblings of the former United man.

There was also a quiz between Jamie Carragher and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy. The Foxes were the home side on Monday night, earning a 1-1 draw with Tottenham thanks to a goal from their legendary forward. Vardy didn’t win the game but he won the quiz, though he did find an aspect of one question ‘disgusting’.

It was a pre-recorded item (which you can watch below) in which the pair were asked various questions which were mostly on the Premier League . Which team has won the most games on the opening weekend, what has been the biggest first game scoreline, and that sort of thing.

But some related to the players themselves. “Jamie Vardy has more Premier League red cards than Jamie Carragher: True or False,” was one such puzzler. What do you think the answer is? The former Liverpool man initially thought it was him. “I got one at Fulham, one at Charlton,” Carragher said.

Vardy, meanwhile, began counting his off: “Stoke, West Ham, Wolves.” The pundit opted for the Leicester man, purely on the basis of himself being the answer to the previous question and it seemed unlikely it would be the same answer again. Vardy plumped for Carragher, but he was proven incorrect. They had both remembered their own tallies correctly, meaning the red card count was 3-2 to the present-day player.

On the video of the quiz, Vardy expressed mild annoyance, but it appeared to be more down to getting the question wrong rather than anything else. However, he gave a post-match interview to the Monday Night Football panel after the game. It concluded with host Dave Jones jokingly suggesting to Vardy that he should watch the quiz online to find out the result.

“I’m sure that I did say congratulations to Carra, he’ll have definitely beat me,” Vardy said. “I couldn’t believe I’ve been sent off more, that many times, it’s disgusting,” he added, drawing laughter from the panel. The Leicester striker shouldn’t feel bad – you could get away with a lot more in Carragher’s day!
