Bruno Fernandes has opened up about the conditions he laid out before committing his future to Manchester United, stating his desire for the club to make new signings and compete with the Premier League's best.

The influential skipper, who has signed a fresh contract amidst growing transfer speculation, is set to remain central to Erik ten Hag's strategy this term. But he would not commit his future without assurances from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the higher-ups that United would bolster its squad.

Chatting with Manutd.com , Fernandes made it clear: "The club knew that I want to compete with the best teams. They knew that we needed to improve the team. And I think that we're doing that."

He acknowledged that winning isnt a given, particularly in an unforgiving league like the Premier League , and set realistic goals with the management.

Fernandes further stated: "I said to them: 'I don't need you to promise me that we're going to win the league,' because no one can promise that. But at least that we will have a team to compete and be competitive throughout the season, to try to achieve silverware and to compete at the highest levels.

"I think the club is doing that. It's trying to bring people in to get more players with quality in the team; to get more competitive, [so everyone is] fighting for your place."

United has been under scrutiny for their transfer strategies in recent years, but with Ineos now steering the ship, they've shown a more shrewd approach this window. Early signings Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro were swiftly followed by a double swoop for Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich, just in time for last week's Premier League opener against Fulham.

The Red Devils are still on the hunt for a new midfielder, with PSG's Manuel Ugarte topping their wish list. They've also been active in trimming the squad, having already offloaded Donny van de Beek, Mason Greenwood and Willy Kambwala, with more departures expected before the transfer window slams shut next week.
