Liverpool supporters are rapidly learning some key lessons about the club’s new head coach and his methodologies. There may be a few feathers ruffled this season.

“Kill them with passes,” Arne Slot was heard shouting during a pre-season training session. He also emphasised the need for physicality when talking after Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Ipswich , a match in which he substituted Jarell Quansah for not winning enough duels .

Further insight into Slot has been provided by sports psychologist Dan Abrahams, who worked with the Dutchman at Feyenoord. He has been speaking to the FC Bullard podcast and gave great insight into the 45-year-old.

When asked what Slot is like, Abrahams described the new Liverpool boss as: “intelligent, a football obsessive, a tactical obsessive. [He's] very, very smart from that perspective and I think, most importantly, open-minded. We talk a lot these days about marginal gains in sport and all of that is great and true, but you can't just bring anything and everything in otherwise there does become too much noise."

"He's a critical thinker and I had a good relationship with him in as much as he gave me permission to be straightforward with him and provide appropriate feedback and ideas, but he didn't just take on board anything,” Abrahams continued.

"He pushed back, he checked and challenged what I had to say and stretched me just like Eddie Jones did at England rugby. I think the best coaches are the ones who are open-minded, but won't just take anything on board.”

"It was a privilege and an honour to get the opportunity to work with him and I'm excited to see how it goes. I'm not a Liverpool fan, but I've worked with Liverpool players in the past and I'm excited to see how it goes."

Abrahams concluded by drawing a parallel with Jurgen Klopp . "What a person to follow. He's going to have to use all of his managerial skill and tactical skill. It would be remiss of me not to say he's a very, very good people person like Klopp. He gets on with his players, motivational, well-spoken and his English is very good which is going to help."

The sports psychologist put his thanks to Slot on record on X (formerly Twitter) at the end of last season. “I’d like to thank Arne Slot for giving me the chance to work with the team [Feyenoord],” he posted. “To Stijn Vandenbroucke, @LeighEgger and Ruben Pieters…as well as Sipke Hulshof and all the staff and players for bothering to listen to my nonsense!”

“I’m 0.01% part of the equation (like, really small) but as an Englishman I could never have dreamed of having the honour to be Eredivisie champion last season and Dutch Cup winner this season. Wishing #Arne the very best of luck at #LIVERPOOL.”

Liverpool.com says: It's fascinating to learn more about Slot and his outlook. He simply isn't as well known to most football fans as Klopp was prior to his arrival at Liverpool, so any insight is very welcome.
