Mohamed Salah contract stance clarified after transfer exit rumors emerge

Mohamed Salah's contract stance has been clarified after rumors surrounding a transfer exit for the Egyptian emerged.

The Liverpool winger, now 32, has entered the final 12 months of his current deal at Anfield and is yet to put pen-to-paper on fresh terms to remain at the club beyond the end of the season. As a result, the Egyptian will leave Merseyside in less than 12 months unless he signs a new deal.

As things stand, there are no signs of offering Salah a new contract, although both parties seem fairly relaxed over the current situation. After all, the Reds must still resolve the long-term futures of defensive duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk .

On Tuesday, the ECHO reiterated that as things stand, Salah is set to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season - something that applies for every player who has entered the last year of their contract and not offered new terms.

However, chaos quickly ensued when Transfer News Live misinterpreted the story to its 2.5million followers on X on Wednesday by saying that Salah "plans to leave Liverpool at the end of his contract next year" and "doesn’t want to renew at the moment".

In response, the ECHO's Paul Gorst clarified that this "just isn’t true" and was "a total misrepresentation of what was written." So Liverpool fans, there is still every chance that Salah may agree to a new deal in the next few months, and there is no confirmation that he wants to leave at the end of the current campaign.

However, Liverpool must be quick in dealing with the situation, with other clubs entitled to enter pre-contract negotiations with the Egyptian as of January, meaning he can agree to sign with a new club on a free transfer ahead of next summer.

A recent report from The Athletic claimed that Salah is "open-minded" over his future and has not ruled out extending his deal at Liverpool. While there is strong interest from Saudi Arabia, Salah believes he can play until the age of 40 and has reservations over the lack of quality in the Saudi Pro League .

It's added that Salah is also keen to see how the new era under Arne Slot plays out, and remains "relaxed" over his current situation as he focuses on on-field matters for the Reds. On Saturday, he continued his remarkable run of scoring on the opening day of the Premier League season by netting in the 2-0 win over Ipswich .
